BACKGROUND

“Follow me. I know a shortcut.”

Côté comes from a military family and served in the Canadian Reserve during his college years. After graduating from college and studying criminology, he became a military police officer with the Canadian Forces. His specialized training in high-risk long- and close-range combat situations, maritime rescue and armed boarding made him a promising candidate for the RCMP Emergency Response Team.

Even after joining the world-renowned special operations unit, JTF2, Côté continued to hone his skills, learning tactical piloting of land and water vehicles at high speeds, handling hazardous materials and hostage rescue techniques, among other things. He is self-disciplined and adaptable in stressful situations. His collegial and intuitive leadership style makes him one of the more flexible team members. In addition to French and English, Côté is fluent in Pashto. For personal interest, he is currently studying Kanien’kéha (Mohawk).

PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPERTISE

Specialist Sébastien “Buck” Côté is one of those laid-back people who jumps into every conversation and makes everyone feel comfortable. I enjoy our meetings together. When we first met, he was formal but not necessarily reserved. I understand why he is described as affable in his environment. He gets along well with a wide variety of people. Tactically savvy people notice this tendency, but all who work with him appreciate it.

Côté is adventurous and, despite his long military service, is dedicated to his work with undiminished dedication. His childhood was shaped by stories of his traveling ancestors who plied Canada’s rivers, made a living as fur trappers, and helped map the north for the railroad and mining industries. He told me that he only recently found out that his great-grandfather almost drowned in the rapids, but was saved by his Mohawk friend. Had it not been for his friend, Côté’s father would never have been born. Therefore, he told me, Côté wants to learn the Mohawk language as a thank you.

This is a beautiful example of Côté’s innermost being. Even when he desperately wants to change the world, he does so sensibly and realistically. He works toward real results and is not deterred by the effort involved.

He grew up in a close-knit family, the middle of three children. I’ve come to the conclusion that the whole family needs to be very physically active. Côté says that most of his activities take place outdoors. He also readily told me about his fascination with mechanical puzzles. These consist of a large number of fine metal pieces. The challenge is to put them back together correctly. Côté told me that his uncle showed him how to make them and that he has been doing it ever since. The game he showed me was not only designed by Côté himself, but he also machined the parts himself. Côté’s ability to design and make something so complex is a testament to his analytical mind and artistry. I only wish he hadn’t let me do it. Embarrassingly, it turned out to be extremely difficult for me to solve.
