BACKGROUND

“You can’t understand a conflict until you’ve been on both sides.”

Cohen’s mother is a well-known Jewish political activist and professor. Her father, on the other hand, is from Palestine and is a professor of Middle Eastern studies. Cohen grew up in Israel and showed a talent for math and physics at an early age. She earned a degree in civil engineering from Tel Aviv University and studied a few semesters at Boston University.

She then enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). After the arduous twenty-four months of in the elite unit of the Israel Air Force, Jechidat Shaldag, she served for five years. Because of her vast experience in ground and air operations and her outstanding navigational and reconnaissance skills, regardless of weather or terrain type, she was invaluable to Operation Orchard. Cohen was recruited by FBI SWAT and relocated to the United States. Her civil engineering degree, as well as her talent in structural strength, allowed her to develop advanced destruction tactics and related equipment. In addition to Hebrew, Cohen is fluent in Arabic, English, French and Greek.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT.

After several meetings and attempts to convince Special Operations Officer Eliza “Ash” Cohen not to consider me a commanding officer, I finally abandoned my efforts. She asked me so many probing questions, I almost felt like she was analyzing me.

Cohen is not interested in talking about her childhood. She holds a grudge against one of her grandmothers, who must have had a very judgmental nature. There is no evidence of lasting trauma, however. Military service offered her a kind of escape from the tense family atmosphere and immediately appealed to her order-loving and goal-oriented nature. Cohen also said that high-risk scenarios suit her as long as the rewards are right, but did not elaborate on the degree to which personal risk would be acceptable.

Her identity is closely tied to her military training and operations. It is extremely difficult to draw anything personal from the mix. Cohen is very cautious and does not maintain close friendships. Her connection to special operations officer Miles “Castle” Campbell is therefore extremely important to her – and I would add, to the team as well. The two are very well suited to each other. Because of Campbell’s approachable nature, Cohen is also able to step out of her comfort zone without feeling insecure or prejudiced.

When Cohen is asked to describe herself, she likes to fall back on assessments of other people: for example, she told me that our special operations officers Dominic “Bandit” Brunsmeier and James “Smoke” Porter think she is “too serious,” while others find her “demanding” and opinionated. So I asked her if she agreed with those descriptions. She replied that it was only important to her that the other operators respect her. I’m pretty sure that’s the case.

In ongoing operations, Cohen exhibits exemplary behavior: She’s smart as a whip, and her aggressive approach keeps her one step ahead of others. During mission debriefings, however, I’ve been able to observe a different kind of behavior. Then she rides on every little mistake, real or not, which is probably due to the aftermath of combat. It’s only understandable that someone with such outstanding abilities would take issue with her own actions, however, this behavior is not without consequences for the rest of the team. We should encourage them to evaluate what happened as a team effort and not place all the blame on themselves. Like all of our operators, Cohen knows that there will always be situations for which she cannot prepare. And yet, she allows the stress of uncertainty to gnaw at her. This is a problem we will have to discuss with her.
