Ubisoft has recently announced the quarterly figures for the first quarter of 2020. There you can see a strong growth for the tactical shooter Rainbow Six Siege and that for years. This shows: Dealing with the game as a service game works.
How is Rainbow Six doing right now? In Ubisoft’s latest quarterly figures, Rainbow Six: Siege stands out as one of the big winners. According to the company’s figures, the shooter increased its revenue by a whopping 30% in the same period last year. It is said to have continued to grow “despite increasing competition”.
Siege is thus apparently one of Ubisoft’s biggest winners, along with Assassin’s Creed (60% in the overall franchise) and Just Dance (500% in the overall franchise). At the same time, the company can report a record in player engagement and the number of players in the quarter.
The company’s total revenue in the first quarter is 410 million euros. The most important platform here is the PlayStation 4 (34% of revenue), replacing the PC from the number one spot at the same time last year.
How does growth happen? The fact that Rainbow Six is currently so successful could have several reasons. On the one hand, the current Corona crisis certainly plays a role. Many who have to stay at home simply want to gamble.
In addition, Rainbow Six has built up a successful e-sports scene that attracts thousands of spectators to many tournaments. Currently, for example, the GSA League is running for the German-speaking region, which entertains fans from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
The GSA League is the new national league for the DACH area.
The biggest point, however, might be that Rainbow Six is undergoing a strong service. Since its release in December 2015, it has been polished and expanded again and again.
Rainbow Six shows: service pays off
This is how Rainbow Six is accompanied: Ubisoft has been accompanying Rainbow Six permanently for almost 5 years now, providing it with new content and fixing bugs. It is constantly improved to provide players with a great experience.
The former 21 operators at launch have now become 57 – the newest two are Ace and Melusi from – Season 2 of Year 5. The next two operators are also already in the starting blocks and seem to bring skills that could come from action movies.
In addition, there are new maps and always events and Battle Passes that provide players with new, fresh content and make them want to spend a little more time in Rainbow Six again. Even existing content is being tweaked again and again:
There are also some ideas for the future. Rainbow Six is supposed to get the often praised ping system from Apex Legends, so that communication in the game will be easier.
What other problems are there? Despite the polish on the game over the years, there are still quite a few construction sites that have been bothering players for a long time. The hit feedback, for example, is not as reliable as it should be in a shooter. Hits are simply not evaluated from time to time.
In addition, there are always reports about a strong toxicity in the community. This doesn’t seem to be more prevalent than in other shooters, but it does cause resentment time and again. One player, for example, was kicked out of the round even though he saved his team. For some, this is a sign of the players’ bad behavior in general.
Sexism as a shadow over the numbers
In the middle of the report on the quarterly figures occurs a statement from the company on the subject of sexual harassment. Ubisoft apparently now wants to take tougher action against it and has already taken some measures because of existing problems, which are detailed in the report:
- there are quite a few investigations into this problem going on at the moment
- the composition and organization of certain departments has been revised so that the teams work better together
- some reorganizations are intended to ensure that inappropriate behavior is better prevented, detected or sanctioned
- the position “Head of Worklplace Culture” has been filled and there is a new position, the “Head of Diversity and Inclusion”
This is Ubisoft’s response to recent fierce sexism allegations, which were hardened by an insider report.
