Update 25 January 2022 (17:20): Attentive readers have noticed: The Amazon ‘Prime spoiler’ on the PS5 with drive* has disappeared – on the Digital Edition* and the Horizon: Forbidden West-Bundle* is the hint “Prime members have priority access to PlayStation 5”. on the other hand, is still available.

What does that mean? Completely unclear. However, much speaks for the fact that between today and the Horizon 2-Release on February 18 more consoles on the market – analogous to the last major Sony title Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Early/mid-June.

Still open is whether an ‘official’ Horizon-bundle is being put together: The Amazon package consists of two parts – the console will be shipped in advance, and the game will follow on time for the release date.

Update from January 25, 2022 (17:15): Addendum to the 1:45 p.m. report: A customer was asked by her Saturn store to retroactively add €100 to the €599 package. Reason: The PS5 bundle should not have been sold in this composition and at this price.

In another case, it was argued with a Sony requirement that a minimum total price is mandatory to protect against scalpers / resellers. We think this information is a pretext – among other things because low-threshold packages (example: Digital Edition plus controller) were also offered at the PS5 drop on Thursday. However, the research is still ongoing – we are always grateful for information via mail.

Update from January 25, 2022 (13:45): MediaMarkt and Saturn are starting to make the PlayStation 5 available: Several readers report that they have been notified by their responsible store and can pick up the PS5.

The pre-order campaign took place last Monday and Tuesday (January 17/18); the console could be reserved against a down payment. Officially promised was/is February 5, 2022. We assume that the handover of the estimated 20,000+ PS5 boxes will take place over the next week and a half.

Update as of January 25, 2022 (12 noon): Less than an hour after the queue opened, the PlayStation Direct contingent is sold out. Literally it says: “PS5 consoles are sold out for today. However, PS5 accessories and PS5 games are still available. We are continuously working to offer more PS5 consoles soon.”

Update as of January 25, 2022 (11:03 a.m.): After the end of the regular sales window for invited PlayStation customers, Sony Interactive opens PS5 sales to everyone: the queue is open.

Update as of January 25, 2022 (10:30 AM): There are a number of encouraging announcements this morning:

• For one thing, the aforementioned PS5 sales at PlayStation Direct has been successfully completed: Congratulations to all readers who succeeded in buying. Remarkable: Nobody had deposited the PS5 purchase interest in the PSN – but that is exactly what has been possible since recently.
• For the second report more Von Floerke-customers that credits have been made to the credit card account. In one case, the console arrived today without any notice – despite prior withdrawal from the purchase contract and refund of the purchase price. It remains exciting …

Message from January 25, 2022 (8:30 a.m.): It’s been 40 long days since Sony Interactive sold the PS5 on PlayStation Direct. The in-house factory outlet has only been online in Germany since the beginning of November. In consideration of the IT infrastructure, only very small contingents are ever unlocked: For this purpose, selected PlayStation Network customers receive an invitation via mail – like this weekend.

The drop takes place this morning from 9 o’clock and is comparatively relaxed for the invitees, because they don’t have to ‘fear’ many competitors and certainly no scalpers / resellers / bots. Unfortunately, many buyers only realize that they need a credit card (Mastercard or Visa) during the payment process – that’s why we regularly point this out so that there are no unpleasant surprises.

Incidentally, this also applies to a potential (by no means guaranteed) ‘open sale’ that was last seen on PlayStation Direct. In this phase, every customer with a PSN account can order a console – at least in theory, because the quantities are rather manageable, as mentioned. Sony Interactive does not want to compete with the retail partners (yet).

Those who have been following the PS5 ticker for a while will remember that after the console’s launch in November 2020, there were several ‘waves’ – that is, gigantic console inventories that spilled across the country in a short period of time. After four or five waves, this phase was over because Sony switched to supplying retail partners in a very targeted manner.

Since then, the ‘drop’ has ruled: a rarely predictable, because unannounced PS5 sale on the net. GamesWirtschaft logs all small and large drops in its own database – this results in the drop infographic (see below), from which ‘patterns’ can be read: Which retailer sold how many consoles and when?

GameStop and Expert* have switched to selling the PS5 exclusively through brick-and-mortar stores, mostly via waiting list. Other retailers now have huge gaps since the last drop, for example Müller (34 days), Euronics (27 days) or Otto* (40 days), while the top dogs MediaMarkt* and Saturn* are supplied at shorter intervals.

Today’s PlayStation Direct sale plus the upcoming delivery of consoles from the PS5 store pre-order at MediaMarkt and Saturn starting next week are, in our view, clear indications that we will see an increased volume of PS5 online sales again by the turn of the month at the latest.

This may also be true for Amazon*. As with all other retailers, we advise adding the desired models to the wish and watch lists in advance (menu item “Add to list”):
