Pragmatic Play – Curse of the Werewolf – Free Slot Game

The story that man is turned into a wolf, usually against his will, has been a persistent myth that is still going strong in modern times. Therefore, there are already many werewolf slots, and Pragmatic has wisely opted for a somewhat original approach with Curse of the Werewolf Megaways. The title may sound serious enough, but the graphics and soundtrack soon show this to be more of a horror / comedy with neatly designed cartoon-style characters.

The 6×6 reel setup is set against a misty, gothic village backdrop, and you won’t find the usual avalanche feature in this game. However, you will benefit from a mystery symbol feature as well as 2 randomly triggered spin modifiers in the base game. This is the 4th Megaways engine slot from Pragmatic, but they are not yet warm enough to offer something truly innovative to the genre. This is really mostly about the bonus round, and the volatility is brutally high with wins over 40,000 times your bet as an ever-present possibility.

You’ll need a healthy dose of patience to appreciate this game. Although the base game features are somewhat helpful in breaking up the gameplay, they usually don’t pay that much. The bonus round can go either way, as it usually does, and we got to the short end of the stick in our 200-spins test session. Here, the goal is to turn the 4 village characters into the high-paying werewolf symbol. The sooner you can do this, the greater your chances of significant wins. All in all, this is another solid Megaways title from Pragmatic, but we hope they bring some real innovation to the table next time around.

What are the bonus features?

There are a lot of features here, as this game offers something more than the regular Megaways features. Pragmatic has decided to drop the standard cascading reels feature in Curse of the Werewolf Megaways slot. This is an interesting twist, and we’ll take a closer look at everything you can look forward to here.

Periodically, you will land a number of howling werewolf symbols on the reels. These are mystery symbols that turn into a random regular symbol. This can help you land winning combinations when you least expect it, and the mystery symbol can land on all 6 reels.

You will also benefit from 2 randomly triggered spin modifiers in the base game. The Super Spin feature will give you stacks of high value symbols, while the Guaranteed Win feature will give you a bigger win across multiple paylines.

Free Spins in Curse of the Werewolf Megaways

The free spins bonus round is triggered when you land at least 3 bonus symbols anywhere on the screen. You can land between 3 and 6 bonus symbols, which will award you 8, 10, 12 or 15 free spins. You can also add extra spins to your list during the feature. Landing 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 bonus symbols will give you 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 additional free spins.

Usually, during the bonus round, you land a lot of the attacking golden werewolf symbol and it acts as a half wild that can be used for all regular symbols except the high value werewolf symbol. Each village character symbol contains 5 lives, and the golden werewolf attack removes between 1 and 5 lives from a character each time it lands.

When all 5 lives are removed from a villager, they turn into a werewolf. This means that this symbol is now replaced by the highest value werewolf symbol for the duration of the free spins round. You will also get 1 additional free spin if you manage to turn humans into werewolves. The progress can be seen on the meters on the left side of the reels.

Game instructions

People familiar with games will immediately recognize the minimalistic and modern game interface, and everything you need can be found here under the reels. We will take a closer look at all the important things you should know in order to play this game. However, keep in mind that this section of the review is mainly intended for newbies and less experienced players.

You can start by checking the game settings via the small hamburger menu icon at the bottom left. Here you can activate the Quick Spin option to increase the game speed. This is a good idea in this game, especially if you are in a bit of a hurry to get to the bonus round. You can also activate the battery saving mode. This is good if you are playing on your phone or tablet and can’t charge for a while.

You can turn the background music and game effects on and off separately here, which is always good. Also, you can turn off the intro screen to save time the next time you load in the game. The volume can also be adjusted seamlessly in-game, something we miss from many other developers.

The big “i” icon takes you to the paytable, where you can check the corresponding symbol values on the very first slide. The paytable is dynamic, as usual from Pragmatic, and you will see that the values shift according to your chosen bet level. The premium symbols are worth between 10x and 1.5x for 6 on a payline, and there are 4 village sign symbols as well as the premium werewolf itself.

You win by landing at least 3 symbols from left to right on adjacent reels. You can use the arrows to scroll through the paytable to learn more about the various bonus features. Towards the end you will find the game rules. Now you can choose your bet level between 10 pence and €100 per spin. You can then set up the autoplay feature with 10 to 100 autospins or spin the reels manually.

The 200 Spins Curse of Werewolf Megaways Experience

The cartoon-style theme has made this game stand out from many other wolf/werewolf slots, and the enormous potential caught our attention right away. Pragmatic has already won some successful and strong Megaways titles, and we were definitely excited to see what they had come up with this time.

The brutality of the volatility was evident from the start, as we mostly landed dead spins or smaller wins. The mystery symbol feature seems to be triggered quite often, and it did produce some good wins from time to time. Nothing out of the ordinary, but between 2x and 10x is something you can expect most of the time from this feature.

When the turbo is turned on, this game comes at you at a decent pace. However, on our unofficial “oddly satisfying” gameplay scale between 1 and 10, we’d this a solid 6. Nothing about the twists is particularly pleasing, but at least there are no annoying hiccups or lags to slow you down.

Towards the middle of our session we somehow managed to trigger the bonus round, but we only landed the minimum of 3 scatters. This gave us 8 free spins and we landed the werewolf strike symbol on more or less every spin. By the middle of the session, we had already converted the two lowest value character symbols into werewolves, but so far we had only collected measly winnings of $30.

On the very next spin, we had a decent 30x win, which the game made a big deal out of. With 2 spins remaining, we managed to turn the lady (character with the second highest value) into a werewolf, and this also gave us a much needed extra spin. On the very last spin, we landed 2 scatters, which gave us 2 more spins, but we didn’t get any more “big wins” from them. In the end, we came away with only 38.5 times our bet, which was a bit disappointing to say the least.

Summary

Most wolf and werewolf games out there tend to be more serious with their theme. Pragmatic Play, however, has managed to create a more humorous atmosphere in the Curse of the Werewolf Megaways slot. The characters and the wolf itself are cartoon-style caricatures, and the soundtrack is a parody of “scary” horror movie music. So far, so good, but the game lacks real originality and innovation.

The mystery symbol feature is somewhat helpful, but almost the default feature in most Megaways titles. The lack of cascading reels is actually refreshing and certainly saves you time in the race for the all-important bonus round. The 2-reel modifiers can be helpful as well, of course, but the bonus round is where you’ll most likely get close to the maximum win potential of 40,000+.

Pros

2 random reel modifiers
Mystery symbols feature
Free spins with symbol transformation
High volatility and 40,976x maximum win potential

Cons

Does not really add anything new to the Megaways genre
