PoGO – Pokémon Go: Zapdos as Raid Boss – Counter Guide

It’s sizzling in Pokémon Go: As part of the Kanto Tour 2021, the legendary bird Zapdos is coming back to the Tier 5 Raids. Do you want to face the charged fluttering man? Then take a look at our counter guide to Zapdos to know which fighters you want to take into battle in February 2021!

February 18, 2021 update: The Kanto Tour 2021 ensures that the legendary birds from Kanto (d’uh) will once again appear in Pokémon Go’s raids, from February 20, 2021 to March 1, 2021! Do you want to hunt for a Shiny specimen or finally add the Electric Flutterman to your collection? Then we have a current counter guide for you, which considers Mega Pokémon as fighters – but we leave Crypto Pokémon out of the recommendation, because leveling them up is relatively expensive. By the way: If you catch Zapdos during the event or until March 1, it will learn the attack Thunder Shock.

  • Rihornior with catapult and rock thrower
  • Mega Rexblisar with powder snow and meteorologist
  • Mamutel with powder snow and avalanche
  • Rameidon with catapult and hail of stones
  • Terrakium with catapult and hail of stones
  • Galar-Flampivian with ice tooth and avalanche
  • Despotar with catapult and stone edge
  • Glaziola with ice shard and avalanche
  • Snibunna with ice shard and avalanche
  • Demeteros with stone throw and hail of stones
  • Mewtu with confusion and ice beam
  • Geowaz with stone throw and stone edge

A Zapdos has the perfect 100% IV value when it has 2,015 CP at level 20. At level 25 (with the Rain and Wind weather boosts), on the other hand, the CP value for the perfect 100% IV is 2,519. You can catch Zapdos as a Shiny, by the way, if you’re lucky – although the color difference isn’t very noticeable,

Original post from September 15, 2018: After Zapdos Day on July 21, the legendary bird is now making Pokémon GO s Raids unsafe again. As part of the Ultra Bonus event, the electric flying Pokémon will appear as a Tier 5 boss from September 13 to 20 at 10 p.m. CEST, alternating with its fellow legendary bird Arktos and Lavados. With a little luck, all three birds can also be found in their Shiny variant and once again have their exclusive attacks Thunder Shock (Zapdos), Gale (Arktos) and Sky Sweeper (Lavados) in their luggage, which you already know from the reward days of the three global challenges.

Pokémon GO: The best counter Pokémon and attacks for all Raid bosses

Raid boss Zapdos will face you with a proud 42,961 CP. With friend bonuses, the right weather, and a Despotar with the Catapult attack from Community Day in your luggage, ambitious trainers can take on the legendary bird in pairs, according to the Pokémon GO Hub; everyone else will have to take on at least four in the raid battle. Zapdos is a Pokémon of the type Flight and Electric, so you can only deal effective damage with ice and rock attacks. On the other hand, the yellow feathered creature only suffers reduced damage from ground, beetle, plant, flight, battle or steel type Pokémon, so it is not recommended to use them.

The three best counter Pokémon in the fight against Zapdos:

  • Despotar with Catapult and Stone Edge.
  • Rayquaza with Dragon Rod and Rage Attack
  • Geowaz with Stone Throw and Stone Edge

Good counter Pokémon in battle against Zapdos:

  • Mewtu with Psycho Blade and Spook Ball
  • Rossana with ice breath and avalanche
  • Kyogre with Cascade and Blizzard
  • Dragoran with Dragon Rod and Tantrum
  • Brutalanda with Dragon Rod and Draco Meteor
  • Keifel with Ice Shard and Avalanche

Useful counter Pokémon in large raid groups:

  • Raikou with Thunder Shock and Surge
  • Amoroso with Stone Throw and Stone Hail
  • Arktos with ice breath and ice ray
  • Latios with fire breath and dragon claw
  • Regice with ice breath and blizzard
  • Lunastein/Sonnfel with Stone Throw and Stone Hail
  • What to expect in the fight against Zapdos

As on Zapdos Day, Niantic will once again equip the yellow feathered creature for the Ultra Bonus Event with the exclusive attack Thunder Shock, which gives your companion a noticeable damage boost. In addition, the legendary bird has four other electric attacks in its quiver:

  • Charge Beam,
  • Lightning Cannon,
  • Thunder and
  • Thunder Bolt.

In the worst case, a Zapdos with thunder shock and lightning cannon awaits you in the raid. You have a relatively easy game against the combination of charge beam and thunder. But even then, Zapdos still packs a punch thanks to the following base stats:

  • 253 Attack
  • 188 defense
  • 180 Stamina

The Weather Outlook

A tough battle awaits you should it pour during the raid, as rain boosts Zapdos’ electro attacks. In return, both Rain and Windy raise Zapdos’ level from 20 to 25. While this makes the Raid battle much more difficult, it also gives you a stronger Pokémon should you defeat and capture the legendary bird. For comparison:

  • With level 20 and no weather boost, the captured raid boss has 1,820 to 1,902 WP,
  • With weather boost and level 25, the captured raid boss has 2,275 to 2,378 WP.

Your best friend is the Partly Cloudy weather effect, which boosts your rock attacks, such as Catapult or Stone Edge. Snow, however, which boosts your ice attacks like Ice Death or Avalanche, is a bit too early in September.

Pokémon GO

Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.

Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights

Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.

Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.

Pokémon Go Updates, News, Raids and More

The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events). For particularly eager mobile or smartphone Pokémon trainers, there is also an external IV calculator, such as the online tool from .gameinfo.io or on Pokefans.net, to check the values of your Pokémon.
