The Team Rocket bullies are the first real PvE encounters outside of the normal raids in Pokémon GO – and some of them are really tough. We have summarized the best counters for all encounters so that you can survive the battle against the meanies.
Team Rocket is on the loose! Trainers have recently been able to encounter the nasty villains in Pokémon GO and challenge them to battle in order to free the Crypto Pokémon they have enslaved. But the clashes with the creeps known from the game series have it all – no trace of the incompetence of Jesse and James. In order to give Team Rocket the beating they deserve and make sure that their venture is a shot in the dark, we have compiled the best counter Pokémon for all battles against Team Rocket currently available in the game, based on an article from Pokemon Go Hub, along with a few general tips.
Team Rocket Encounter – General Tips
Before getting down to the nitty gritty, consider the following tips for battling Team Rocket bullies:
- To identify which Pokémon a bully will use against you in battle, pay attention to how he taunts you before the battle actually starts. With what he says, he will tell you his preferred Mon types or the strongest Pokémon he will use himself.
- You’ll get the chance to catch either the bully’s first or second Pokémon after the battle – not the third (strongest) Pokémon.
- If you lose, you can restart the battle without penalty. The bully will rely on the same Pokémon as before.
- Team Rocket bullies don’t use shields. Take advantage of this and defend yourself with shields against their charging attacks.
- Each of your Pokémon that becomes incapacitated reduces the amount of Pokéballs available to you for the Encounter with the Shadow Pokémon. So, replace Pokémon with low HP in a timely manner.
- Your Pokémon will not be automatically healed after the battle, nor can you heal them yourself in the selection screen.
- You can move away from the Pokéstop after the start of the Encounter without the game stopping the battle.
A quick note at this point : we have translated the TR bully spells below from Pokemongohub from English. It is possible that the German versions differ slightly. However, because the encounters with the TR-bullies are quite rare, we couldn’t note down all the German spells ourselves yet – but we will update this article accordingly.
Team Rocket Encounter – Tense and ready to strike!
Bullies who tell you that they are ready to strike prefer Pokémon of the Poison type, especially Zubats and Bisams or their evolutions. These encounters account for about 14 percent of Team Rocket invasions. Recommended counters include Raikou against Zubat, Golbat, and Iksbat, and Mewtu against Bisasam and Bisaknosp. Alternatively, you can also use Despotar with Catapult.
Team Rocket Encounter – Normal does not mean weak
Some TR bullies will directly tell you that they rely on Normal-type Pokémon. In 18.5 percent of all TR invasions, you’ll be dealing with Rattfratz, Rattikarl, Relaxo, and rarely Zubat, Glurak, and Dragoran. It’s best to team up with Machomei and Kapilz with rock attacks and Despotar against Zubat, Glurak and Dragoran.
In very rare cases you will have to deal with three Relaxos. In this case, you’ll have to adjust your strategy. Decide for:
- Despotar with Catapult and Crusher or Stone Edge for maximum damage to Relaxo
- Dialga with Fire Ember and Draco Meteor
- Metagross with Star Slash
- Ursaring with battle attacks
- Dragoran with dragon attacks
- Lucario with battle attacks
Team Rocket Encounter – BRÜLL! … What does it sound like?
TR bullies that come at you with a roar use Dragon Pokémon, primarily Dratini, Dragonir, and Dragoran. Accordingly, you’re best served with a team of Ice Pokémon. Opt for Mamutel, Glaziola, and Snbunna. Dragon TR bullies are encountered in 11.5% of encounters.
Team Rocket Encounter – Hey you, these waters are treacherous!
Once again, the TR bullies directly indicate which Pokémon type they prefer. If you encounter opponents with Water Pokémon like Shiggy, Shillok, Turtok, Hydropi, Moorabbel, Sumpex, and rarely Zubat and Rattfratz, counter with Grass Pokémon like Roserade, Gewaldro, and Bisaflor.
Team Rocket Encounter – We’re Ready. You betcha!
Cherries are fruit and therefore plants – so you know, this time you’ll encounter mostly Plant Pokémon (8.5 percent of all Encounters). This time you’ll be dealing mostly with Bisasam, Bisaknosp, and Bisaflor, and less frequently with Zubat and Rattfratz. You’ll have an easy time with Fire Pokémon like Lavados, Glurak, Entei, and Heatran.
Team Rocket Encounter – My bird Pokémon wants to fight you!
This time, Team Rocket takes to the air – you’ll encounter bird Pokémon in 8.2 percent of Encounters, including Zubat, Golbat, Iksbat, Dragoran, and Glurak. Opt for Despotar with Catapult and an Ice Pokémon or Dialga as a backup here.
Team Rocket Encounter – Do you know how hot a Pokémon’s fire breath can be?
Fire, Fire Everywhere: Now it’s all about Fire Pokémon, primarily Glumanda and Glutexo, and in isolated cases Glurak. In this ten percent of all Encounters, you’ll make the best choice with Water Pokémon like Kyogre and Rock Pokémon like Despotar with Catapult.
Team Rocket Encounter – Don’t bother, I already won.
This Encounter comes in different variants with different Pokémon as well, according to Pokemongohub. Here you have the opportunity to catch a Crypto-Relaxo, so make sure you still have all Pokémon fit at the end of the battle if possible.
In the “Prepare for your defeat” variant, the bully has the following possible Pokémon teams:
- Bisasam, Bisaknosp, Bisaflor.
- Schiggy, Glutexo, Bisaflor
- Bisaknosp, Shillok, Glurak
- Shiggy, Glutexo, Glurak
- Bisaknosp, Shillok, Turtok
If the bully says “Don’t bother, I’ve already won”, he’s betting on these teams:
- Schiggy, Bisaknosp, Bisaflor.
- Glumanda, Schiggy, Glurak
- Glumanda, Schiggy, Turtok
- Schiggy, Glutexo, Turtok
- Relaxo, Glurak, Relaxo
- Relaxo, Dragoran, Relaxo
And last but not least, it moves into the field with these Pokémon when it tells you that “Winning is for winners”:
- Glumanda, Glutexo, Glurak
- Bisasam, Glumanda, Turtok
- Schiggy, Bisaknosp, Turtok
- Relaxo, Glurak, Relaxo
- Relaxo, Dragoran, Dragoran
To defeat this type of TR bully, you need a strong team according to the bully’s Pokémon. We recommend you Machomei, Despotar, Metagross, Lavados and Ice Pokémon like Mamutel and Rossana.
Pokémon GO – Equipment for on the go
We hope that this guide will help you win your battles against Team Rocket and wish you success in saving the Crypto Pokémon!
Pokémon GO
Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.
Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights
Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.
Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.
Pokémon Go Updates, News, Raids and More
The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events). For particularly eager mobile or smartphone Pokémon trainers, there is also an external IV calculator, such as the online tool from Pokemon.gameinfo.io or on Pokefans.net, to check the values of your Pokémon.
