PoGO – Pokémon GO: How quests and research tasks work

With the research quests, players in Pokémon Go get the opportunity to take on quests and thus pursue special tasks. The dataminers of pokemongohub.net have dug around in the game files and found out what rewards are available, how to meet Mew and what else there is to know about the quests/research orders in Pokémon Go.

Starting Friday, March 30, players will be able to pursue quests or research quests in Pokémon Go for the first time. These are activated by turning Pokéstops and have something to do with the mysterious Pokémon Mew. So far, not much is known about what the rewards will be, how to obtain Mew, and if you might even be able to catch legendary Pokémon on your own. The dataminers at pokemongohub.net have culled the game files and give us the first solid info that answers some of these questions.

As was known in advance, you should shoot at least one Pokéstop every day to get a research mission – and more importantly – a stamp. Once you’ve collected seven stamps, there’s a chance of a research breakthrough that will earn you a special reward. The task of a research mission can be catching a special Pokémon nearby or have other tasks ready that have something to do with finding Pokémon. Special research projects are a bit more elaborate and require a number of different activities. In total, there are seven possible rewards in the game files that you’ll receive for completing a quest:

Quest Rewards

  • Experience
  • Items (see below)
  • Stardust
  • Candies
  • Clothes for your avatar
  • More quests
  • An encounter with a Pokémon

Confirmed item rewards so far are two rare bononbs each, one charging TM, and three hyper potions.

Special research quests

“Professor Willow can also assign you to special research projects, taking you on an adventure filled with exciting discoveries.” So says the official post from Niantic. The Special Research Assignments are unlocked by completing more assignments. Keep in mind that you can complete as many quests as you want per day. According to pokemongohub.net, there is a longer quest called “A Mythical Discovery” in the game files, through which you can obtain the Pokémon Mew!

Research Breakthroughs

A research breakthrough takes place after obtaining seven stamps, as mentioned earlier. Unlike the 7-day series of catching one of Pokémon per day and turning Pokéstops, you don’t have to collect a stamp every day to keep your stamps – there is no series that can break off. The rewards for a research breakthrough are as follows:

  • Stardust (amount unknown so far).
  • “Mysterious” items
  • A special encounter with a Pokémon (can be legendary)

Quest types

In the game files you can find more or less cryptic names for the respective quests, but from them you can deduce quite well what is meant by them:

  • MULTI_PART
  • CATCH_POKEMON
  • SPIN_POKESTOP
  • HATCH_EGG
  • COMPLETE_GYM_BATTLE
  • COMPLETE_RAID_BATTLE
  • COMPLETE_QUEST
  • TRANSFER_POKEMON
  • FAVORITE_POKEMON
  • AUTOCOMPLETE
  • USE_BERRY_IN_ENCOUNTER
  • UPGRADE_POKEMON
  • EVOLVE_POKEMON
  • LAND_THROW
  • GET_BUDDY_CANDY
  • BADGE_RANK
  • PLAYER_LEVEL

Pokémon GO

Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.

Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights

Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.

Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.

Pokémon Go Updates, News, and More

The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events). For particularly eager mobile or smartphone Pokémon trainers, there is also an external IV calculator, such as the online tool from .gameinfo.io or on Pokefans.net, to check the values of your Pokémon.
