Original news from October 27, 2018: Just in time for the Halloween event 2018, not only a lot of ghost and unlight pocket monsters are up to their mischief in Pokémon GO, with Giratina Niantic also sends a fourth-generation mon into the Tier 5 ring for the first time. From October 24 to November 20, 2018, you can face the legendary, 34,987 CP raid boss in its transformation form.
As a Spirit and Dragon Pokémon, Giratina takes a good beating from five attack types at once: very effective damage is dealt by Spirit, Unlight, Ice, Dragon, and Fairy attacks. Our overview shows which counter-Pokémon have the necessary power to fight against Giratina’s defense (225) and stamina (284):

According to a simulation by the trainer guys and gals at Pokémon GO Hub, you can send Giratina onto the arena boards the fastest with the two dragons Rayquaza and Brutalanda. Which pocket monster you put in the ring most cleverly, however, depends largely on your group size and – the smaller your group – Giratina’s attacks. If the legendary raid boss has his two dragon abilities Fire Ember and Dragon Claw up his sleeve, be careful with Dragoran and co: Like Giratina, they also take very effective damage from dragon attacks, plus the STAB bonus. The same, but without the STAB bonus, applies to Glass Cannon Gengar and his spirit colleagues, should Giratina conjure the spirit attacks Dark Claw and Shadow Strike out of the hat in the raid.
Shortly after Giratina’s release, numerous YouTube videos were posted showing trainer duos taking on the legendary dragon in pairs, proving that the new Gen 4 boss is not much of a challenge for high-level trainers with a small Rayquaza army:
Pokémon GO: The weather forecast
If you encounter a Giratina with Dragon attacks, the toughest battle awaits you in windy weather. Foggy weather lets Giratina’s (and your) Spirit attacks do more damage. Both fog and wind also buff the raid boss itself – as a reward for the higher difficulty, you’ll get a better Pokémon that will save you a lot of mileage and stardust should you defeat and catch Giratina:
- At level 20 and without weather boosting, a captured Giratina has 1,848 to 1,931 WP,
- with weather enhancement and level 25 over 2,310 to 2,414 WP.
Pokémon GO
Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.
Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights
Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.
Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.
Pokémon Go Updates, News, Raids and More
The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events). For particularly eager mobile or smartphone Pokémon trainers, there is also an external IV calculator, such as the online tool from Pokemon.gameinfo.io or on Pokefans.net, to check the values of your Pokémon.
