PoGO – Pokémon Go: Despotar as Raid Boss – Counter Guide

Despotar remains a powerful Pokémon in the Pokémon Go metagame. A lot of time has passed since its first appearance in Pokémon Go Raids – reason enough to update the counter for this powerful mon! Check out the best counters for Despotar in the guide!

Update from June 19, 2020: A lot of time has passed since Despotar first became available as a raid boss in Pokémon Go Raids. Three generations of Pokémon have appeared in the meantime, there have been adjustments to battle stats, and new Legendaries are getting in the way of the popular Godzillamon. Nevertheless, Despotar, a pocket monster of the types Rock and Unlight, is still an absolute force in the metagame of Niantic’s AR app. That’s reason enough to update our Despotar counter guide, so you can still easily add some copies of Despotar to your collection. Tier 4 raid boss Despotar is still very strong, by the way, and should therefore be tackled by at least two or three players – soloists are left out in the cold, as Niantic’s adjustments have made it virtually impossible to defeat Tier 4 bosses alone.

In any case, you’re on the safe side with 3+ players. By the way, for the perfect 100% IV Despotar needs 2,191 WP at level 20, boosted by foggy or partly cloudy weather it has 2,739 WO (level 25) at perfect 100% IV values. The current best counter Pokémon for fighting Despotar are:

  • (NEW) Meistagrif with counter and focus strike
  • Machomei with karate chop and balancing
  • Hariyama with counterattack and punch
  • (NEW) Lucario with counter and aura sphere
  • Lohgock with counter and focus punch
  • (NEW) Flambirex with foot kick and focus kick
  • Kapilz with Counter and Focus Strike
  • (NEW) Kobalium with metal claw and sancto blade
  • (NEW) Toxiquak with counterattack and punch
  • Skaraborn with counterattack and close combat
  • (NEW) Karadonis with foot kick and focus kick
  • (NEW) Demeteros with clay kick and focus kick

Original news from October 14, 2018: Despotar is one of those pocket monsters in Pokémon GO that gets a mention as a recommended counter in every other raid guide on Niantic’s AR app. And for good reason: With its base values of 251 (attack), 212 (defense), and 200 (KP/endurance), Despotar can not only dish it out, but also take a beating. In addition, the dark green monster is considered one of the best attackers of the type Unlight as well as of the type Rock and is therefore used especially against Spirit and Psycho Pokémon (Unlight) as well as Flight, Fire, Ice and Beetle bosses (Rock).

Pokémon GO: These are the best Pokémon in the meta for each type.

In the wild, Despotar and its predecessors Larvitar and Pupitar are rarely encountered, but as a Tier 4 boss, the coveted pocket monster can be seen regularly in Pokémon GO’s Raids, and with the right high-level counters, can even be sent to the mat in pairs. Despotar has a double weakness against battle attacks, which must be exploited mercilessly, and still suffers very effective damage from water, plant, beetle, fairy, ground, and steel attacks.

The two best counters in the fight against Despotar

  • Machomei (Combat) with Counter (Combat) and Sweeping Blow (Combat) – or any weaker combination of combat attacks
  • Hariyama (Combat) with Counter (Combat) and Sweeping Blow (Combat)

The weather outlook

The easiest combat awaits the raid duos among you in cloudy weather, which further strengthens your already powerful combat attacks, but offers no advantages to Despotar. If you also have very effective water or beetle attacks in use, rainy weather also grabs you under the trainer arms.

Despotar’s own attacks are boosted by sunny weather (Fire Attack Firestorm), snow (Steel Attack Iron Tail), partly cloudy (Rock Attack Stone Edge), and fog (both Unlight Attacks Bite and Crunch), but the raid boss itself is only boosted by foggy and partly cloudy weather. Both weather effects raise Despotar’s boss level from 20 to 25, giving you a stronger Pokémon when you defeat and catch the raid boss:

  • At level 20 and without weather boosting, a captured Despotar has up to 2,097 WP,
  • with weather boost and level 25 up to 2,621 WP.

Pokémon GO

Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.

Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights

Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.

Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.

Pokémon Go Updates, News, Raids and More

The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events). For particularly eager mobile or smartphone Pokémon trainers, there is also an external IV calculator, such as the online tool from .gameinfo.io or on Pokefans.net, to check the values of your Pokémon.
