PoGO – Pokémon Go: 2020 Nostalgia Challenge: Hoenn – Research Guide

The first Pokémon Go players have already unlocked the Temporary Research Nostalgia Challenge 2020: Hoenn, so we can now expand our to include the nine steps for the Hoenn tasks. Grab not only Groudon, but also TM, encounters with Gen 3 Pokémon like Kindwurm and a Star Piece, Smoke, and special candies. We have all the info on Temporary Research Nostalgia Challenge 2020: Hoenn in the guide.

The 2020 Nostalgia Challenge is in full swing in Pokémon Go and THE opportunity for players to grab a cool legendary pocket monster or two – either because it’s fancy, or because they want to use it in the metagame. However, these are Temporary Researches that you can only tackle during a certain period of time. The 2020 Nostalgia Challenge: Hoenn is also such a Limited Research, and will be available from May 15, 2020 to May 22, 2020.

Theoretically. Because, for example, the Nostalgia Challenge 2020: Johto (by the way, still doable until May 15 at 13:00) was already active before the actually planned start at 13:00, without the bonuses – whether it was a mistake on the part of the developers of Niantic or not, is not known. However, it is already certain that you will receive five extra special candies with the first step of the Nostalgia Challenge 2020: Hoenn, as a small compensation for the fact that the Johto Challenge currently only earns five instead of the planned ten.

What is already known about the Nostalgia Challenge 2020: Hoenn is that you can expect nine steps to complete the Temporary Research, and that you will get a Groudon with the charge attack Fire Strike at the end. And Groudon is still one of the strongest ground attackers in Pokémon Go! Below, we’ll first give you an overview of the bonuses that are active in addition to research, then you’ll find the steps for Nostalgia Challenge 2020: Hoenn in the guide as well as their reward. Attention: not all steps are known yet. We will update them as soon as the research is activated on May 15, 2020. However, you can already stack reward encounters from the field researches. In addition, it can be expected that there will be no Raid task as still in Nostalgia Challenge 2020: Kanto. Pokémon Go players have already complained to the developers about this – after all, how would it be possible to complete the step if there is no arena nearby and you are not allowed outside due to the Corona pandemic?

Update from May 15, 2020: All steps of the Temporary Research Nostalgia Challenge 2020: Hoenn are now known and we have updated our guide accordingly. By the way, the developers at Niantic are less generous this time and have replaced the golden Himmihberries and silver Sanana Berries with their lesser variants.

During the Limited Research the following bonuses are active:

  • Pokémon from the Hoenn region, such as Eneco, Sengo, and Vipitis, appear more frequently in the wild.
  • Pokémon from the Hoenn region can be challenged in Raid battles.
  • The following Pokémon hatch from 7-km eggs: Loturzel, Bummelz, Nincada, Eneco, Zobiris, Flunkifer, Knacklion, Barschwa, and Perlu.
  • Since Rayquaza won the vote for Pokémon of the Year in the Hoenn Pokémon category, Pikachu with Rayquaza caps are appearing in the wild.
  • If you’re lucky, you may even encounter Iridescent Eneco!
  • Hoenn Pokémon appear as rewards during event-exclusive field research projects.
  • The hatching distance for eggs and the distance for Buddy Candy are halved.

If you still want XP, use the lucky egg only at the last step to turn 9,000 XP into 18,000 XP after all.

Pokémon GO

Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.

Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights

Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.

Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.

Pokémon Go Updates, News, Raids and More

The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events). For particularly eager mobile or smartphone Pokémon trainers, there is also an external IV calculator, such as the online tool from .gameinfo.io or on Pokefans.net, to check the values of your Pokémon.
