In League of Legends, players still have a problem with how Riot Games handles the situation when a teammate is afk for a long time at the beginning of a match or even leaves the match. There has been an option for a “remake” since 2016, but many players find it annoying because it creates nonsensical matches in LoL that drag on for a long time.
What’s the problem?
- In normal matches and ranked matches of LoL, it happens again and again that players either go afk very early, in the first minutes of a match, or cannot participate in the match due to connection problems.
- In such a case, the LoL match is actually already lost for the team with the missing player and many feel that it is pointless to continue playing now if you are at such a disadvantage.
- There is a way to stop a match early in such a situation, but the “remake” system is felt to be insufficient.
LoL wants to solve one of its most annoying problems.
Voting must be initiated manually – time windows are short
How does the system work?
Through the “remake function”, since 2016 it is possible to start a vote from minute 3 to decide that the game is canceled:
- The team has 60 seconds to type “remake” in the chat when a player is either inactive or disconnected – then a vote starts.
- When voting, players have 30 seconds to vote yes or no.
- If there are only 4 people left on a team, 2 must vote yes. If there are only 3 left in a team, one “yes” vote is enough.
- A remake does not count as a win or a loss. However, the inactive player is penalized.
This is the criticism of the system:
On reddit, a player has now spoken out against the system. He says: In such a case, when one or more players are missing, a vote is simply unnecessary – in the case that one drops out so early, matches should always be made again.
This is because voting is difficult, often missing someone who is in the game together with friends (a “premade group”): The friends then wanted to protect him and would therefore vote “no”.
Or the time-window for the chat-command /remake or the vote itself ran so fast that not everyone noticed and therefore the remake did not happen.
Then, when the match is on, the outnumbered team would still partly gleefully take advantage of the situation of winning for sure and stretch a completely pointless match to 50 minutes and enjoy it.
The thread creator says the system is a “terrible mechanic that was extremely poorly implemented”.
Overwatch is cited as a model
So is the discussion:
In fact, many see it the same way as the thread creator. The thread has over 470 comments and more than 5,800 upvotes.
They too are unhappy with the “choice” option in the remake. Mainly because the whole mechanic hinges on seeing the message in chat and then having to hurriedly initiate the process so as not to miss it.
People wish that if there was already a vote, it would pop up automatically and a single vote would be enough to end the vote.
One user said:
“If they’re a premade group of 5 and they know the AFK player is coming back and they’re okay with it, then let them play shorthanded. But as soon as a single person doesn’t want to play 4 vs 5 for the next 15-30 minutes, the game should be stopped because no one deserves to be involved in something like that in a video game.”
Overwatch is cited as a positive example: If someone leaves the match there in the first minute, it just closes – and there’s no way to stop it.
LoL is one of the most successful video games and had a strong year in 2021. You can see that in the criticism, which chirurigically addresses individual details; while in other games there are often major problems with the game as a whole, in LoL the criticism actually revolves around very specific decisions and supposed minor details:
