Diablo Immortal gets a lot of criticism for its Pay2Win aspects. Now a player has found an unusual way to finance it: World of Warcraft.
Here’s how he did it: In the Diablo Immortal subreddit, user “daymeeuhn” tells (via reddit) that he used a total of 600,000,000 – that is, 600 million – units of WoW gold to upgrade his Immortal character. In the game he calls himself “Naecabon”.
Getting that much gold in WoW is in itself an impossibility, Naecabo says. It only worked because he was able to use codes from old loot cards that he had collected at Blizzard events ages ago and that had been gathering dust in a drawer ever since.
But now the moment had come to use them. “I spent May trading old codes for Spectral Tigers and the like for gold ingame, using Discord Markets,” he explains. “I never used RMT (real money transactions) when it came to the gold, and I had no interest in selling the gold for US dollars,” he says.
He understands that the gold can also be perceived as a currency with real-money value, but it is very difficult from his point of view. Because selling WoW gold can lead to bans. It just wouldn’t be worth it. And also, selling the loot codes, he describes from his experience as almost impossible and you could easily get cheated.
After more than 3 weeks of swapping: “Cash whales, I’ve got it in for you”.
The kickoff was the announcement of the PC port and over time 600 million gold was raised, describes “Naecabon”.
- The player exchanged all the WoW gold for WoW tokens. This lasted for over three weeks.
- He converted the tokens into Battle.net credits – about $15 per token.
- This credit, in turn, went into Diablo Immortal.
In total, the player said he got 3,243 WoW tokens for his gold that he converted, which is the equivalent of $48,645 – or €46,236.59.
With that, he upgraded his legendary gems in Diablo Immortal, reached 7,000 Resonance, and completed 2,165 Elder Portals.
The result: an extremely strong character. But why the whole thing?
This is the reason: “I thought it would be really fun to try to make an in-game ‘whale’ character that uses WoW gold as their main source of funding. I think it would be funny to flatten a cash whale as a ‘gold whale’.”
“Whale” usually refers to players who gain an advantage in games via very large real-world investments.
“My character is now a proverbial powerhouse cash streamer. […] flattening with creepy efficiency,” he said, “There’s no real reason for it other than to have fun with it. If you see me fighting cash whales in Battlegrounds, know that I’m attacking them with ‘World of Warcraft’ currency as my main source of funding,” he says.
He also points to an example of the streamer “JTisallbusiness,” whom he encounters in a Battleground and promptly destroys. He, in turn, calls Naecabon one of the best equipped players at the moment (via Twitch).
If at some point he had to “swipe” to stay relevant, he would weigh his options. But for now, he wants to “fight the good fight,” he says: “Cash whales, I’m gunning for you.”
What do you guys think of this action? Do you think it’s good, or is it basically the same as “normal” Pay2Win for you? Feel free to leave us a comment!
Basically, Diablo Immortal is criticized mainly because of its Pay2Win mechanics. A strong Free2Play player addressed this again just recently.
