PES is no more! eFootball becomes free-to-play
The popular soccer simulation PES (Pro Evolution Soccer) no longer exists, the developer Konami has announced. PES had already paused last year to switch to the Unreal engine.
Now Konami is going a whole new way. PES will be renamed eFootball and made available for all platforms as a digital-only free-to-play game . Phew, you have to process that first. It may sound strange, but it’s actually not bad – could eFootball become a serious alternative to FIFA?

This is the most notable change for Konami’s long-running football game series – PES is now called eFootball . This may only be cosmetic, but it is a huge thing. PES is iconic among fans and changing that name is really brave! Konami are clearly signaling that a lot will change in their football games. But what will that be?
Ist eFootball Free-to-Play?
Probably the most important change is that eFootball will be a free-to-play game . That means you don’t have to pay any more money to enjoy the great soccer simulation. Sounds fantastic.
As with any F2P game, there will certainly be microtransactions and payment models. Konami has not yet announced what these will look like. We’re very excited to see what they come up with and hope the game doesn’t suffer from screwed up monetization.

What platforms will eFootball be available on and when is the release date?
eFootball will be available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, iOS and Android with a fall release date . We don’t know any more details, but we expect a release date in September, at the latest in early October .
An important piece of information is that eFootball will only be available digitally . Yes, we also cry that the beautiful boxes in our collection, with legends like Adriano, Thierry Henry and Lionel Messi, no longer get an addition. But we are now living in the future where everything is digital and PES is now called eFootball .
Will eFootball replace FIFA as number 1?
For years, oh now even decades, FIFA from EA Sports has been the number 1 among football simulations. Konami and PES – Sorry – eFootball , but seems to be getting serious now and offering serious competition to FIFA.
Not only is Konami trying to get more and more licenses that EA then loses the other way around. Now there is also the massive advantage that eFootball can simply be played for free .
Meanwhile, EA continues to rake in the cash and has even canceled the next-gen upgrade , or simply made it extra expensive. With the possibility of simply starting the download for eFootball 22 and being able to gamble for free , Konami will certainly secure one or the other “newcomer” among us football fans.
