Overwatch pro loses his job

Social media is probably the last place you want to hear about your layoff. But that’s exactly what apparently happened to pro “”.

Who is it about? Sang-min “Myunbong” Seo is 23 years old and most recently played a support role for Overwatch team New York Excelsior. He played Ana and Zenyatta, among others.

Myunbong had only joined the team in January 2022, having previously played for Boston Uprising for just under two years. But after just over half a year, it’s already over: NY Excelsior has parted ways with the 23-year-old.

Myunbong apparently only found out about this when everyone else already knew – via a tweet from his former team, which has over 130,000 followers on Twitter.

Big back and forth on Twitter about the

Team New York Excelsior () apparently posted a farewell statement on Twitter thanking their team for the pro’s time with them.

Myunbong responded to the now-deleted post only with a question mark:

This raised questions in the comments about whether Myunbong even knew about his dismissal. As a result, NYXL stepped up to the plate again. Because apparently this statement really wasn’t supposed to go out yet.

They had posted the thank-you statement to Myunbong, but failed to coordinate it sensibly with the team beforehand: “We take full responsibility, this is not excusable,” the team wrote via Twitter.

NYXL also addresses Myunbong directly again, “We are very sorry for our miscommunication and for putting you in this situation. While we wish it had been better communicated, we appreciate your time with us and wish you nothing but the best in the future.”

Myunbong himself then also spoke up on Twitter later, explaining that a dismissal was a topic in a feedback session, but then it happened very suddenly.

“The sudden news, which was the result of a mistake made by another department in the team, as well as the fact that I haven’t heard anything about the possibility of being fired, feels very unjust. GL NYXL,” Myunbong wrote in the latest tweet to date on the subject.

Exactly why the major miscommunication occurred is still unclear so far, as are the actual reasons for the split. However, Myunbong is no longer listed on the team’s active squad page – so the parting seems to be final.

This is not the time that strange situations have occurred around Overwatch. Another example: A few weeks ago, a setup for a big tournament in Overwatch caused irritation.
