Overwatch 2 kicks out a tank, becomes only 5vs5 – eSportsNews eSports Overwatch

Finally there was a sign of life from 2. But the developers dare to take a bold step. The group size of the teams shrinks.

This is the situation:

  • Overwatch 2 has finally shown new gameplay from PvP.
  • The group size in Overwatch matches drops from 6 to 5 players, you do without a tank in the future.
  • Tanks are being rebuilt, are to become more like “Bruiser” heroes.

The Overwatch community has been pretty unhappy for quite a while now. This is mainly due to the fact that the content flow on Overwatch 1 has virtually gone out and the information on part 2 is still sparse. Now, however, the developers have shown fresh gameplay from PvP scenes and dropped a big bombshell: The old 6vs6 principle will be dropped.

This is what the game director says: The still fairly new game director Aaron Keller had the following to say about the changes:

We feel like this is the next step in how Overwatch should be played. If you think about it, there’s a lot that happens on an Overwatch map. It’s an extremely fast-paced game.

We’ve always tried to make our battles easy to understand and even with all the work we’ve put into it, sometimes it’s just too hard to keep up with what 11 other players are doing on the battlefield. Removing 2 of them simplifies everything and it allows players to understand everything around them better and make better decisions.

Where is Jeff Kaplan?

The face and figurehead of Overwatch was previously the “old” game director Jeff Kaplan. However, he announced just under a month ago that he was leaving Blizzard and thus also giving up his post as game director for Overwatch 2. Kaplan was more or less the mentor for Keller, who has now taken over. Kaplan’s departure was received quite emotionally by the players.
As before, however, Overwatch 2 will rely on the “role-lock system”, in which only a certain amount of each character type can be present in the team. The previous “2-2-2” (2 tanks, 2 DDs and 2 supporters) will then become a “1-2-2” – i.e. only 1 tank and 2 DPS heroes and 2 supporters each.

Why is this being changed?

Tanks have been a problem in Overwatch for quite some time. The impact that two tanks can have on gameplay is enormous. In many cases, two tanks can be such a huge hurdle that they can buy enough time to ensure the entire team respawns or protect each other so well that the wall of health seems nearly insurmountable. Keller commented:

Tanks can be problematic. A DPS hero is simple – they just shoot. But a tank has many abilities that cause a stir and, when stacked with other tanks, lead to problems for other teams trying to counter them.

However, the change also ensures that individual players have more weight on the team. According to Keller, this increases the chance that each player will have “the opportunity to have a stronger impact.” This increases the potential to “carrien” the whole team as an individual player and makes for more cool moments.

Still changing on the tanks:

But also the remaining tank in the team, will soon fulfill a different post than today. Blizzard wants to deviate from the concept that tanks are simply “solid walls” that opponents have to work their way around. Instead, tanks will be pushed a bit more in the hybrid direction to make them effective “bruiser” characters that can withstand a bit more, but can’t permanently wrap themselves in defensive abilities.

What do you guys think of the planned changes? Cool new features or is Overwatch going the wrong way with them?
