Although Overwatch 2 is in beta, it is already being played in e-sports, the Overwatch League. But there are problems, because the maps are apparently not yet suitable for it. Team Florida Mayhem is now using an insane play to advance on the Circuit Royal map. But the play was banned and had to be taken back. From Blizzard’s point of view, this is not a “clever use of game mechanics”, but an exploit.
What kind of play is this?
- The play is a kind of “surprise attack” that uses the special skills of the heroes Mei and Symmetra in combination, creating an interesting synergy. It was applied to the new map Circuit Royal.
- Mei uses her ice wall to create a solid surface on a distant and actually unreachable roof. Symmetra uses her teleporter to get the team to this roof within moments. This allowed Team Florida Mayhem to skip over much of the map. Normally, you can’t take the “shortcut across the buildings” in this form.
- The opponents are thus taken completely by surprise and the attacking team has a clear advantage by exploiting the synergies of their abilities.
Even the casters praise the play and are quite enthusiastic about the action, raving about the “Wall TP over the Top” – the clip starts at 2:57:20:
Blizzard says fun play, but it’s banned
Why is it banned? The head of the Overwatch League, Sean Miller, spoke out on Twitter and said:
“We understand it’s a fun play. But the rule is that if you use Mei’s Wall to reach a non-usable location with the teleporter, it’s an exploit. Something like that has never been allowed in Overwatch League matches. This rule was shared with teams and players before the start of the – Season .”
How Overwatch reacted: The league cancelled the round and Florida Mayhem had to repeat their attack.
The manager of the “suffering team”, Paris Eternals, said : Even before you could appeal, Blizzard had already decided that Florida Mayhem had to repeat the attack.
In the end, it made no difference to Paris – even without an exploit, Florida Mayhem clearly defeated the team from France 3-1.

As a beta title into the million dollar esports league.
That’s what’s behind it: It is quite unusual that a title that is actually still in beta is now being played as a game in a major e-sports league. Blizzard has obviously put itself under enormous time pressure here.
We know that the Overwatch League is a big investment for Blizzard and the teams involved, but Overwatch 2 doesn’t seem to be really e-sports ready yet.
In the run-up to the league, there had already been some discord:
