The multiplayer shooter “Overwatch” was a huge success for developer Blizzard for years. With the announcement of Overwatch 2, the direct sequel, should be a few things different.
New mechanics, new heroes, new maps and even a story/co-op mode were announced. Now selected players can already play in a Closed Beta get a taste of the game.
The first voices about Overwatch 2 are rather restrained so far. At the moment, only the multiplayer mode can be tested, and there is no sign of co-op or major innovations. Some describe the title currently rather as “Overwatch 1.5“.
What’s new in Overwatch 2?
However, there are still a few points that run significantly differently in Overwatch 2. For example, the number of players in the teams has been reduced from six to five. This means that a second tank is missing from the team, but it has been sorely needed on some maps so far.
Furthermore you could use the new heroine Sojourn for testing. She is supposed to be quite strong and relatively mobile and flexible. Other already established Overwatch heroes, on the other hand, have received a new role or other abilities. These now include passive abilities.
A new game mode called “Thrust also provides some variety. In addition, Blizzard added a new ping system that is supposed to make it easier to uncover enemies, similar to other multiplayer titles.
Overwatch 2: What are the opinions on the closed beta?
Overwatch 2 is currently criticized above all for the fact that it is Too little new offers to lure former fans back into the game. Despite some improvements, many things feel the same, as GamePro’s beta conclusion describes, for example.
Other sites, however, describe Overwatch 2 as a “big change” and a “completely new game(feel)“, such as My MMO. Matches should now be decided much faster than in the predecessor, which is partly due to the smaller teams.
This can sometimes lead to more intense matchesbut also to Frustration can lead to frustration. Because especially newcomers have a hard time when it can already be decided in the first minutes who will win.
Apart from the pace of play, however, the main thing that has changed is the Meta of Overwatch changed. Former top hero picks that used to guarantee victory are now significantly weakened. Also the Support Gameplay is said to have changed a lot.
The community is currently very divided. While some are disappointed with Overwatch 2, others feel well entertained by the game and appreciate the new path Blizzard is taking. However, it is not foreseeable how much the feedback from the closed beta will influence further development.
Also unknown is the release date for the game. However, it is assumed that Overwatch 2 not until 2023 will be officially released. Until then, there may be more betas that we can participate in.
How to participate in the Overwatch 2 beta?
The closed beta for Overwatch 2 will officially run from April 26 to May 17, 2022. The first invitations were sent out by mail right at the start, but it is currently unclear whether more will follow.
