- Blizzard reduces the team size of Overwatch 2
- Only five players per round – and one tank less
- In the PvP stream Blizzard showed more changes to the gameplay
During the recently announced PvP stream, Blizzard showed everything they want to change in competitive matches in Overwatch 2. In addition to a new team lineup, the developer presented new maps and features in action and revealed Torbjörn’s new look.
Let’s start with the most important change. Blizzard is saying goodbye to traditional 6v6 matches and reducing the team size to five players per side. There will be one less tank in the role queue, leaving two damage dealers, two supports, and one tank.
Aaron Goodman, Jeff Kaplan’s successor as game director, explained why Blizzard decided to take this step. A lot had changed in Overwatch, he said, and the game didn’t even have a hero limit in the beginning and “you could pick six Winstons for your team composition if you wanted.” Later, it even added a role lock. Now the game is taking it one step further.
“There’s a lot happening on an Overwatch map,” Goodman explained. “It’s incredibly fast-paced, and we’ve always tried to make our battles easy to read and understand, and even with all the work we put into it, sometimes it’s just hard to keep track of what eleven other players are doing on the battlefield.”
Only five small player icons left on each page.
“Removing two of them simplifies everything and allows players to understand what’s going on around them and make better decisions.” The new concept is also intended to “allow individual players to have a greater impact on the game.”
With this decision, Overwatch 2 aligns itself with the usual team size of other shooters like CS:GO or Valorant, all of which operate in a 5v5 format.
And why do tanks in particular have to suffer from the change now? Goodman also commented on this. “Tanks can be problematic,” he says. For example, he says, they have noisy abilities or can combine their abilities with other tanks. So they can “create problems for other teams trying to defeat and counter them.”
In compensation, Blizzard makes sure that the individual tank gets a bit stronger. For example, Reinhardt can shoot up to two fireballs, and Winston also gets a ranged electric attack. Zarya’s bubbles have two charges and D.Va can also look forward to more defense matrix charges. In general, Blizzard wants to strengthen the offense of the armored heroes.
Now follows a quick run-through of all the other announcements and changes in the PvP stream.
Blizzard gave all viewers a deeper look at the four new maps. New York is a fairly standard map with small Easter Eggs, and Rio de Janeiro features a club scene that changes slightly at each stage of the match. The C-shaped Rome map features the Colosseum, through which you’ll have to push your target, and the rich Monte Carlo offers a climb up a mountain.
Movement acceleration is slightly reduced and extra health points and shields are now displayed more transparently. They differ in green color from the light blue health points. Also, each role gets a small passive ability gift.
So supports can heal slowly if they haven’t taken damage for a while, damage dealers move faster, and tanks get pushed around less hard and give enemies less charge for their ultimate. In general, there should be less crowd control – so Mei’s primary fire no longer freezes players, but instead does more damage.
Supports get a new healer HUD that helps them keep track of the teammates they are currently buffing or healing. Blizzard also unveiled the new Torbjörn look.
