Online game: “Rocket League” also requires an Epic account on Steam

In the run-up to the planned Free2Play conversion, “” can now only be played with an account. Even long-time Steam users will thus need an Epic account if they want to continue playing the auto-soccer game. They can still launch the game on Steam, but will only be able to get to the main menu after entering an Epic account. On Steam, many users acknowledge the move with negative reviews.

“Rocket ” will become a Free2Play game on September 23. The popular online game will be financed by optional additional content in the future. Currently, it still costs 20 euros. The plan to switch “Rocket League” to a free model was announced by developer back in July. The popular online game was launched in 2015 and is still actively played today – including as an e-sport. Psyonix hopes that the free2play conversion will lead to a renewed increase in users.

With the Free2Play switch, “Rocket League” is moving to the Epic Games Store: the company behind the Steam competitor has bought out developer Psyonix in 2019. Those who already own “Rocket League” on Steam can continue to play it after the cutoff date and will continue to receive updates.

However, new PC players will no longer be able to download “Rocket League” on Steam – they will only be left with the Epic Games Store. “Rocket League” is also available for Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Several days before the move to the Epic Games Store, the developers have now made the Epic account mandatory. Anyone who does not log in with Epic account after starting the game will not get to see the main menu.

Switching to a Free2Play model is an option for online title providers to fill servers with fresh players and generate additional revenue via microtransactions when sales dwindle. Well-known titles that have subsequently switched to the Free2Pay system include Bungie’s “Destiny 2” and Ubisoft’s “For Honor”.

Even Valve’s exceptionally successful shooter “Team Fortress 2” was originally offered for a fee and only switched to a Free2Play model in 2011 – this example shows that the Free2Play switch does not necessarily have to be interpreted as the last gasp of a dying game.

“Rocket League” is also still successful: on Steam, the car soccer game is one of the top 20 most played titles. In “Rocket League,” players control a car through an arena in an attempt to get a ball into the opponent’s goal with their vehicle.
