WoW: Cataclysm Classic – eSports

WotLK Classic isn’t even out yet, but World of Warcraft is already asking about the next addon, Cataclysm. Is Classic going too far? Or should that be coming as well?

Good times are coming to fans of World of Warcraft right now. Whether it’s the latest “retail” expansion Dragonflight or the revival of past adventures in Wrath of the Lich King Classic, it’s likely to be another good year for both groups of players in 2022. But Blizzard has already turned its eyes to the future and is looking at what might be in store after WotLK Classic. That would be Cataclysm.

New polls want to know if you want Cataclysm Classic.

What Happened. As reported by the site wowhead, several players have received surveys from Blizzard. While the surveys are quite general at the beginning and ask about the basic gaming interest, later it is more clearly about the “next” WoW expansion after Wrath of the Lich King: Cataclysm.

So the developers are asking a lot of details about what WoW fans liked about Cataclysm back in the day and which features were received rather negatively. Some of the questions from the survey are:

Which of these features did you like the most and which the least? Transmogrification, 2 new playable races (Worgen, Goblins), guild progression system, changes to professions.
What don’t you like about the Raid Finder in Cataclysm?
What do you like about “transmogrification”?
What do you like or dislike about “transmogrification”?

The poll definitely makes it clear: Blizzard seems to be taking the idea of “Cataclysm Classic” seriously for now and is now inquiring about fan interest.

What is WoW Cataclysm?
“Cataclysm” was the third expansion of World of Warcraft and tells about how the dragon Deathwing breaks out of the Maelstrom and devastates the world. This triggers elemental problems all over the world, which sometimes have interesting consequences. For example, some areas begin to green up again, while others are incinerated. Old quest areas have been retreaded and modernized, new features like transmogrification or a reduction in the size of talent trees have also been added.

Why is Cataclysm so controversial? For many long-time players, Cataclysm is considered the turning point of World of Warcraft. With this expansion, WoW says goodbye to its original existence and evolves more and more drastically towards the modern WoW we know from Shadowlands, for example.

In addition, Cataclysm also has quite a bad reputation among many who didn’t play at all back then. Because many who only started after Cataclysm have heard from veterans again and again that Cataclysm was “the beginning of the end”.

Cataclysm was also World of Warcraft’s first attempt to modernize the game world. Most areas of Azeroth were at least slightly, but mostly drastically, overhauled in the process. Quests were often combined into “hubs” and new stories were invented that told how the areas had changed since Cataclysm.

On the one hand, this was a nice innovation and a further telling of the story, but on the other hand, it led to all the original quests disappearing. The feeling that Blizzard had “taken away” a large part of the old world from the players with Cataclysm was already spreading at that time.

Whether Blizzard really brings a “Cataclysm Classic” remains to be seen. The fact that there are such quite specific surveys, however, at least shows that the developers seem to be open to changes and in the case of Cataclysm Classic are not afraid to throw big features like the Raid Finder or the reduction of talent points over the pile.

What would a Cataclysm Classic have to bring for you to succeed? Or would Blizzard be better off stopping at WotLK Classic?
