Off the Grid: Gunzilla GmbH raises $46 million

A new round of funding flushes $46 million into the coffers of Frankfurt-based developer studio Gunzilla Games (Off the Grid).

The developer studio Gunzilla Games, founded only two years ago and based in Frankfurt/Main, is developing the online multiplayer game Off the Grid (OTG) based on Unreal Engine 5. A long list of venture capital firms, business angels and investors – including Animoca Brands, Republic Capital, Morningstar Ventures, CoinFund and AlphaCrypto Capital – is backing the company with another $46 million, the equivalent of about €45 million.

The fresh capital is to be used in particular for the expansion of the GunZ trading platform, which offers players “complete control over their in-game possessions.” is intended to give. Users can collect, buy, sell, and trade weapons, clothing, accessories, equipment, and entire game characters in the form of unique digital items (NFTs) via a blockchain-based marketplace.

At Gunzilla Games, we are aware of the sometimes significant reservations and resistance to blockchain and cryptocurrency concepts. The studio therefore emphasizes that the use of corresponding game components should be purely voluntary: NFTs would not be sold directly to players, nor would game progress be affected by payment barriers. Those who are not interested in item trading can skip these functions completely and play the game. “enjoy for free and without any restriction”.

The description of the monetization concept suggests that the Off the Grid-NFTs to replace the classic – Season passes and in-game purchases that come standard in competitors like Fortnite (Epic), Call of Duty (Activision) or () are installed.

Gunzilla founder and CEO Vlad Korolev: “We are committed to giving players complete freedom in every detail of OTG and every step of gameplay. In OTG, players will now be able to own and trade items with other players in addition to the actual gameplay. Players are also assured that they will be able to keep their hard-earned items no matter what. In the current free-to-play games, even something that you have paid for does not ultimately belong to you. This can also be read and checked in the terms of use of each game. If, for example are banned, any in-game item can be taken away from them, even if the ban was accidental. So if you stop playing a free-to-play game, the money you put in also disappears. We’re now reinventing the system and putting control back into the hands of the players. To make this possible, we are using blockchain technology. With OTG and GunZ, we’re creating a universe that will set a new standard in the industry.”

Off the Grid is scheduled for release in 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S and is one of the largest games projects currently being developed by German studios. Other Gunzilla offices are located in Los Angeles and the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. The founding team includes former executives from Crytek, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft.

Gunzilla Games is also an exhibitor at Gamescom 2022 (August 24-28): The booth is located in Hall 8.
