A new Overwatch patch delivers graphics improvements for the Xbox Series X/S. However, owners of a Playstation 5 are left empty-handed. What is the reason for this?
The still-popular hero shooter Overwatch has received a new significant patch, but it doesn’t deliver the same benefits for all users. With update 1.58, Blizzard introduces the so-called PachiMärzi challenge, which allows players to get the Pachimari skin for Roadhog until March 22. In addition, the patch brings bug fixes, workshop innovations and improvements for Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S. Owners of a Sony Playstation 5, however, will unfortunately have to look down the tubes when it comes to the graphics updates.
Overwatch Patch: Three new graphics modes
For Xbox Series X/S, the new Overwatch patch offers three new graphics modes: resolution, frame rate, and balanced mode. In Resolution mode, Overwatch runs at 4K resolution at 60 fps on Xbox Series X and 1440p resolution at 60 fps on Xbox Series S. Various graphics details are reduced here. In the frame rate mode, the shooter even reaches 120 fps on the new Microsoft consoles, if the screen allows it (120 fps or variable refresh rate). Besides the resolution, the graphics details are reduced again here. Xbox Series X runs at 1440p resolution and Xbox Series S at 1080p resolution. The balanced mode offers the highest graphics quality with 1440p resolution at 60 fps (Xbox Series X) and with 1080p resolution at 60 fps.
But why won’t PS5 owners get this update with the three new graphics modes? A similar situation already prevailed with Call of Duty: Warzone and Rocket League. Both titles received updates on only the Xbox Series X/S, which allowed the games to run at 120 fps on the Microsoft console. PS5 users did not get to enjoy these improvements. Eurogamer explains that this would require a completely native implementation for the Playstation 5. On the Xbox Series X/S, it only requires a small update. This is due to the specific implementation of backwards compatibility of PS4 games on the PS5. So, it does not look good for PS4 titles on Sony’s latest console.
