In WoW’s official forums, the Community Council and Blizzard developers have been chatting about the server merges that are coming soon for Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King Classic, respectively. We have summarized the most important findings in this message.

In view of the surely soon upcoming launch of WoW: Wrath of the Lich King Classic, the Blizzard executives want to not only offer fresh level 1 servers, where all interested parties can start from scratch and build a new community together. There should also be a whole series of existing servers are killedwhich, as far as the number of active players is concerned, have been on their last legs for quite some time.

This was already known

We already knew that the developers want to distribute the affected players to other realms with higher populations. This consolidation of realms is planned for the weekly maintenance on August 10, 2022. The following realms will be shut down during this process:

How do the server merges work exactly?

In WoW’s official forums, the Community Council and Blizzard developers recently chatted about server merges. Below we have summarized the most important new findings for you:

• Several factors went into choosing which servers to take offline. Of particular importance was the data on the average daily world population (DAW) that Blizzard tracks internally. The developers set a threshold that servers must fall below over a certain period of time to be eligible for consolidation.
• This threshold is not as low as some players might like. The developers expect that player numbers will increase noticeably with Wrath of the Lich King Classic. And they want to offer these new players servers that have a comparatively small population without queues and layers – because there are players who care about exactly that.
• However, Blizzard wants to take a closer look at the list of servers based on the feedback before the server merges are carried out.
• It is not yet clear in detail which server communities will end up on which servers. The only thing that is clear is that the few active players of the affected realms will not be sent to servers that are only just above the aforementioned threshold.
• With server merges, it is unfortunately not possible to, for example, transfer all horde players from the affected servers to a realm with a high alliance population (to improve faction balance) and all alliance players to a server with a high horde population. Likewise, it is not possible to offer character transfers for only one faction of a server.

• If you don’t want to rely on Blizzard finding the right server for your characters, you should use the transfer options to find a new home yourself. Even more so because during the server merge transfer process, you may not have access to your characters for up to two weeks.
• In the championship – Season , such server merges don’t make sense at the current time, because the current – Season will soon be finished and then all servers will go offline anyway. However, there is a possibility of server transfers.
• Guilds and the contents of the guild banks will not survive the server merge. So get all the items from the guild bank beforehand!
• If the server merge causes two characters on a realm to have the same name, the character that was already resident on that server gets to keep his name. The transferred character must change its name.
• Interface and character options should be carried over through the server merge on the new realm.
