The summer slump is coming to an end: After June and July were quite a drought of new video games, you can look forward to a packed release calendar in the gaming month of August. You can expect not only the usual load of indies and double-A productions. There are also a few real highlights in the coming weeks. We’ll tell you which ones you shouldn’t miss in this month’s preview. For many games, we already have a preview online. So if you’re interested in Saints Row, Two Point Campus, Destroy All Humans 2! Reprobed, Rollerdrome or F1 Manager 2022, you can read the corresponding article right now. If you don’t feel like reading such a mammoth article, then take a look at our video about the game releases in August. You can find it right here on the first page. In addition to the completely new games, we’ve also summarized the ports to other platforms on the last page. PC gamers in particular will sit up and take notice, because the previously Playstation-exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is getting a spin-off on their home machine.

Retreat to Enen throws you into a distant future where mankind only lives together in primitive tribes. There you have to undergo a traditional test of maturity: You’ll be sent out into the world to become one with nature. You hunt, gather and craft your way through an open world with different biomes and a day-night system in classic survival style. And you meditate to establish a connection with Mother Earth. The exercises were designed in cooperation with real psychotherapists and can even be practiced in front of the screen.

The basic idea of The Mortuary Assistant is actually macabre enough: you end up playing the assistant of a mortician, who prepares the deceased for their final journey. But that apparently wasn’t enough for the developers. That’s why the bodies that are brought to the River Fields morgue are all cursed or otherwise possessed by something supernatural. This ensures that during a night shift you’ll not only have to perform the typical embalming, but also a few exorcisms in order to see daylight again alive.

The cuddly-cute contrast program is here with Frogun. In the old-school platformer, inspired by the N64 and PS1 era, you slip into the skin of little Renata. This is with her parents, a famous explorer couple, on a great expedition through the Beelzebub ruins. Until one morning mom and dad don’t come back from an excursion and our heroine has to go on a rescue mission alone. The mission is peppered with puzzles, boss fights and climbing passages in which the eponymous Frogun is used: a climbing hook in the shape of a frog.

Deep and emotional is what South of the Circle is all about. The narrative adventure revolves around Peter, a Cambridge academic who crash lands somewhere in Antarctica during the Cold War.
As your hero struggles with the last of his strength through endless masses of snow and ice, he goes over some formative memories in his head: How he met the love of his life, Clara, at university, for example. Or how his discoveries are used for war. In these past episodes, you can then also make decisions that significantly influence the narrative. In this way, a different experience is created each time you go through the game.

Cowboys, magic and monsters: that’s a combo that seems to be trending this year. We have Weird West, Evil West and in August Hard West 2. In the tactical role-playing game you take control of a gang of outlaw crooks who want to rob the legendary Ghost Train: a bewitched train full of government gold. Of course, you’ll need some supernatural abilities as well as big guns to pull this off successfully. In addition, you can look forward to turn-based battles, extensive character customization and a dynamic game world.
Sword and Fairy: Together Forever
August 4, 2022 | PS4, PS5 | Singleplayer
Sword and Fairy: Together Forever will not be known to most gamers in Germany. However, the Chinese role-playing game series already has a long history and is now coming to the West with its first spin-off. Completely dubbed in Chinese with English subtitles, the game still won’t be for everyone. However, if you’re into Chinese mythology, you might want to take a look at the game. Apart from the typical JRPG mechanics, Sword and Fairy offers a quite nicely designed world in Unreal Engine 4. In the real-time battles, you can freely switch between the characters of your party.

Turbo Golf Racing is actually relatively easy to explain: Just imagine Rocket League, replace the soccer field with a golf course and you’ll have a rough idea of what to expect in-game. You’ll race your car across the green, avoid obstacles like trees and sand bunkers, and have to get the ball into the hole. To be faster than your seven opponents, you use booster pads and shortcuts that are distributed along the course. Or you can install so-called power cores in your carts, which you can use to unlock ground pounders and other abilities.
More games in August, such as the comedic Two Point Campus, in which you build a university of the more whimsical variety, are on the next page. There are also many other games, big and small, that you should definitely take a look at!
