New chat bug is funny but equally dangerous

The new MMORPG New World has already attracted attention with one or two bugs. However, a new bug is so curious that it has caused quite a stir. But it is not only funny, but also dangerous. We at MeinMMO summarize.

Update 11:40: Amazon reacted faster than expected to the new HTML bug and has apparently already fixed it. In the forum, a developer writes: “We have applied a fix that should prevent players from exploiting this bug.”

What happened in New World? A new bug is making quite a stir in Amazon’s MMORPG right now. It’s not the first game bug to cause big waves in the community, but it’s certainly one of the funniest, even if only at first glance.

Apart from the new bug, there are also reports circulating on reddit that an old bug has returned with the latest patch and is once again causing wars to be manipulated.

Apparently, it is once again possible to make yourself invulnerable by exploiting window mode. If you drag your window around exactly when your character is in the middle of a dodge roll, i.e. invulnerable, he will stay that way for now.

This annoys a lot of players because it makes it easier to win wars in particular. Players stand invulnerably on the points to be defended and thus hold their territory without actually being there.

But the new bug could have much worse consequences than just lost wars, even if it seems pretty funny at first glance. There’s more to it than funny sausages and nuts on players’ screens.

YouTuber Josh Strife Hayes explains and shows the bug in the video:

What’s the deal with the new bug? YouTuber Josh Strife Hayes draws attention to the new bug in a video on YouTube. In response, another YouTuber named Callum Upton explains the technical side of the bug and why it’s not just funny.

Basically, the issue is that simple HTML code can be inserted into New World’s chat. For this purpose, the users use the possibility of the MMORPG to link certain items in the chat.

With the help of said HTML code, it is then possible to change the linked items. It is especially easy, for example, to enlarge the displayed image of the item enormously.

As a result, some servers are currently spamming huge sausages and nuts almost non-stop in chat. Also popular are huge yellow boxes with the content “no image found”, which are similarly easy to create and can take on oversized proportions.

“This bug is absolutely game-breaking”.

The downside of the bug: So far, so funny, many may think. But it doesn’t stop with the big sausages and nuts. We don’t want to explain here exactly how to reproduce the error, but we want to draw attention to it anyway.

If you know a little better about HTML, you can exploit the possibility of using HTML codes in chat in almost absurd ways. One variant of this, which is already used very often, is to manipulate the posted item so that it doesn’t even exist in the game.

This causes your game to continuously ask for info that simply doesn’t exist. In response, your game freezes and crashes. The next time you start Steam, it will check the files, which takes time again.

To achieve this reaction, it is enough to hover your mouse over such a manipulated item. This is not only dangerous in Global Chat, but can also target people as a whisper message.

Suddenly the bug is much less funny and very annoying. However, you can basically work around it by disabling the entire chat. Then at least you’ve got yourself out of trouble, but still the bug remains dangerous.

If it takes on too large proportions, even such images can be created (via YouTube).

Why the bug can also be dangerous globally: Once again, we do not want to explain how exactly to use this bug, as it could have a huge impact on the economy of individual servers.

Now it does get a bit more complicated technically, but we’ll try to simplify the process behind it. There are certain quests that you don’t have to turn in anywhere and you don’t have to be anywhere to complete them.

When you complete these quests, your game just kind of sends the server the signal “I completed the quest” and the server says “okay” and gives you the reward.

However, it is currently possible to send exactly this signal through manipulated chat links. The result is that every time you hover over the manipulated item, you complete the quest and earn coins and other rewards. And yes, this actually works.

How Amazon responds: The bug has already been discussed extensively in the New World forum and reported to Amazon. A community manager from Amazon responded by writing, “Yes, we know about this bug and we are currently busy figuring out how to fix it. However, we can’t say when that will take place yet.”

So it remains to be seen how and when Amazon will address this bug. YouTuber Callum Upton says at the end of his video that he will offer his help to Amazon at any time to solve the problems, as they are “absolutely gamebreaking”.

The community is so stunned that all they can do is laugh

How does the community react? Opinions are divided on the forum and on reddit. Some of the players are angry that such errors still happen at all and call them amateur mistakes. Callum Upton also says in his video that the programmers need to “go to programming school again”.

In general, there is bewilderment that such errors are still in play after more than a month. It’s unclear if the is new or just noticed now.

The players who don’t want to get upset anymore are making fun of the bugs and laughing. The mood is therefore rather positive, at least on reddit, albeit fed with gallows humor.

What do the players say? On reddit, fans are mostly just laughing at New World’s mistakes (via reddit):

  • User Pepe2Sad just writes: “Oh boy, here we go again”.
  • 136 likes gets user DopeDoge for the comment: “It’s been 0 days since the last accident.” (via YouTube)
  • User ElDuderino2112 also takes it with humor: “Honestly? Paying 40 euros for a front row seat to watch how fucking broken this game is is the best thing I’ve ever done with money.”
  • User Alkrun laughs it off: “Oh man, I didn’t know it was actually because of something like that. That’s super funny and just as stupid. I really like New World, but this is a great example of how to screw up the launch of a game. It’s like they saw the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 and were like, hold my beer!”

What do you guys think of the bug in New World? Are you guys still pissed or like the reddit also just laughing? Have you already encountered the bug in the game? Feel free to write it in the comments here at MeinMMO.

Just yesterday there was a bug in New World that steals your money when you are offline.
