The developers sell the current CallofDuty : Modern Warfare as a reboot of the series and started a new story arc around the popular Captain Price. A small hint, however, has some players pondering again whether the campaigns might be connected after all. The special thing: The clue is over 10 years old!
With the reboot of the “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” series, the developers of Infinity Ward brought one of the most popular characters of the CoD universe back into action: Captain Price.
CoD constantly brings new updates and content for players. But it’s not just the multiplayer that keeps people busy, the story behind #ModernWarfare does too.
Now players have found a newspaper clipping in a mission of the more than 10 year old #ModernWarfare 2, which pretty much matches an event from the current MW with the supreme giant of the old parts. The discussion about a story connection thus picks up speed once again.
Gamers love such clues and ponder story connections
What does the article show? On reddit, the user “NuclearFPS” found this article on two sites, which reports about a terrorist attack on the Piccadily Circus in London. In a mission of the current Modern Warfare there was such an attack.
Page 1:
Saturday’s bombing in Piccadilly Circus came right after Vladimir Makarov’s 23 recorded message. The ultranationalist militants called “Zakhaev’s Executioner” called to overthrow the current ultranationalist government. For this purpose he sent the recorded message to some news agencies.
In the message, Makarov accused the British government of being responsible for the elimination of Zakhaev and described its intervention in the “Russian Civil War” as the result of a weak man in the Kremlin taking power. Makarov is responsible for the June massacre at the GUM shopping mall in Red Square that claimed 87 lives and promised to continue his campaign of terror inside Russia.
The newspaper article talks about an attack by train. In MW 2019, all that was seen was a van blowing up.
Page 2:
The explosion at Piccadilly Circus could be heard for miles in all directions. Ryan Lastimosa, a U.S. tourist, was watching the changing of the guard outside Buckingham Palace nearly a mile away when he heard a loud bang. “The concussion was so strong that we were practically thrown to the ground.” Near the palace alone, 59 casualties were reported from falling debris. Royal Marines stationed in the area cooperated with local police, but no suspects were arrested. The death toll stands at 407 and continues to rise as rescuers still search for survivors in the rubble.
“The quantity of explosives was considerable, but they were conventional explosives,” an Interpol spokesman said. At the moment the question of logistics is unresolved, we are continuing to work on that. Transporting such a large quantity to this area should not have happened.” Some have speculated that Makarov used a converted subway car full of explosives on the London Underground, which detonated upon arrival at the busy station in the heart of London.
Where was this found? The newspaper article was in a house in the 15th mission from Modern Warfare 2 “Loose Ends”. The house and the wooded surroundings are also waiting part of the multiplayer map Estate.
This mission might have been remembered by some MW players as one of the most prominent characters dies at the end. Ghost is killed by the traitor General Shepherd.
An Easter Egg in the game recalls another cult mission that MW veterans may still remember.
“Loose Ends” is the name of the mission in which General Shepherd reveals himself to the player as a traitor. CIA Supervisor Laswell talks about “Loose Ends” shortly after she first mentions it to General Shepherd. Coincidence?
Modern Warfare 2019 as a possible prequel.
So some gamers think MW 2019 brings a new timeline to the game and starts a story all its own, only loosely taking into account the old “Modern Warfare” events.
For others, this found newspaper clipping forms just another proof that it is a prequel, that is, a prequel to the older MW’s story.
How could the stories fit together? A lot of names are used that are already familiar from the earlier MW’s. The story behind them is left open enough that it might actually fit.
Towards the end of the campaign, Captain Price also assembles a team and plans to create the special unit SAS 141. Included: Soap, Gaz and probably Ghost, all members of this special unit in the earlier “Modern Warfare” parts.
The after-credit scene also drops the names of some MW baddies. General Shepherd, who later betrays the squad, and Viktor Zakheav, the antagonist in the first Modern Warfare, i.e. CoD 4.
Time jumps sometimes make campaigns opaque, and perhaps another sequel will resolve the uncertainty. However, we will have to wait a while for that. Because although the upcoming CoD 2020 is supposed to have no jetpacks, it probably won’t be a new “Modern Warfare” part.
