Fortnite: From hit video game to concert stage
Surely no one could have guessed what would become of the game when Fortnite Battle Royale saw the light of day in 2017. In it, up to 100 players land simultaneously on a shrinking island, where everyone fights each other to be the last survivor (or last surviving team) left on the battlefield. The game rapidly became an enormous hit and also overtook the arenas of professional gamers. As one of the top eSports titles, Fortnite hosts major international tournaments at the professional level. With prize money in the millions, it even belongs to the top eSports titles alongside the mobas Dota 2 and League of Legends. titles with the highest prizes in history of eSports: For example, the 2018 Fortnite Fall Skirmish Series was played for a proud $4 million in prize money. While this didn’t bring Fortnite close to the double-digit millions in the Dota 2 tournament prize pool, which was $25.5 million in the same year, the battle royale game still quickly earned its place as a celebrated eSports title. The game’s success speaks volumes, with over 350 million registered gamers and around 24 million players logged in each day. However, it’s not just the heated action of the battles that attracts players, but also the peaceful activities that are becoming increasingly important in Fortnite.
Marshmello, Travis Scott, Ariana Grande and Coachella
Early on, Epic Games started holding events within Fortnite that require players to log in at the right time to experience it live. Then in 2019, the first musical event took place where players could leave their weapons and combat skills at home and just dance on the dance floor with other players. In April 2019, DJ Marshmello performed live within the game in an exhilarating virtual concert that attracted over 10 million players to the virtual stage. A year later, rapper Travis Scott followed suit, hosting a psychedelic concert extraordinaire with a giant rapper hovering over the stage and dance floor -. over 12 million gamers were there live. It wasn’t until August 2021 that the bar was raised anew, when singer Ariana Grande held a five-day concert tour within Fortnite with her Rift Tour, bringing a virtual event to the stage that the world had never experienced before. Instead of simply standing on a digital stage, players were able to experience the singer in an interactive fantasy world. From dresses and wings made of glitter and glass to flying unicorns and cotton candy worlds to an enormous singer flying through the galaxy, it was all there.
That Fortnite takes the world of music seriously, was also shown recently to North America’s most famous music festival Coachella in California. In line with the enormous music event in April, musical skins landed in Fortnite with which players can equip their avatars to experience the Coachella spirit in Fortnite as well. In addition, 30 songs from the festival’s headliners are available on the in-game radio. Thus, Epic Games does not offer a virtual version of the event, but still brings Coachella into the world of Fortnite. Coachella headliners included singer Billie Eilish. According to rumors, she might even appear in Fortnite herself soon.
Could Billie Eilish be next to take the stage in Fortnite?
Statements from a Fortnite leaker suggest that Billie Eilish is set to step into the spotlight as the next big act in Fortnite. The info comes from FNBRintel, who have made statements in the past that later turned out to be true. The leakers claim that the info about Billie Eilish getting a Fortnite concert next comes from a reliable source. Epic Games has not confirmed this yet, but Donald Mustard, Chief Creative Officer at Epic Games, was recently at an Eilish concert. Could this indicate a cooperation?
Video game or concert stage? Separating the two terms is hardly necessary these days thanks to Fortnite. The hit battle royale title brings both aspects together, taking the world of music to new heights within the game. Music stars like Marshmello, Travis Scott and Ariana Grande have already held huge events in Fortnite and Coachella also shows its influences. We’re curious to see if we’ll be able to experience Billie Eilish live in the game as a virtual avatar next.
