“Arcane” has become a mega-hit on Netflix. All nine episodes of the first – Season of the animated hit based on the “LoL” video game franchise are now available and fans are asking for more. And they’re getting a lot more, probably not just a second – Season .
After the huge success of “Arcane,” it’s pretty much a given that the Netflix series for the popular video game brand “League of Legends” (aka “LoL”) will get a second – Season and the adventures of Vi (voice in the original: Hailee Steinfeld) and company will continue. But anyone who is only thinking about a simple extension of the series is thinking far too small. The people responsible for the series have much, much bigger plans.
UPDATE: Shortly after this article was published, a second – Season has already been announced. All details can be found in the following linked message. However, this article still explains to you what is likely to come in addition (!) to a second – Season .
Teaser for the 2nd – Season “Arcane” on Netflix: These characters return in the “League of Legends” series
Shauna Spenley already hinted at this in several interviews. She was recruited by the former indie game company Riot Games at the end of 2020 to further expand the successful League of Legends brand beyond the core brand. The “Arcane” series is now a first step in this process – implemented in collaboration with Netflix, where Spenley incidentally previously worked for 14 years and helped develop series such as “House Of Cards” and “Orange Is The New Black”.
Hollywood didn’t understand “League of Legends” at first
In a portrait of the Los Angeles Times she pointed out how massive League of Legends is. After all, the game has been played by millions of players worldwide for years – in October 2021 alone, it was said to have been played by over 180 million. Some of the tournaments had over 100 million viewers. So there is an immense audience through the fans alone – and with well-made fantasy entertainment, you naturally also attract people who previously had nothing at all to do with “LoL”. But that hasn’t really penetrated everywhere yet.
She believes that the majority of Hollywood has not yet understood how huge “League of Legends” is, says Spenley. in an interview with the newspaper even before the launch of “Arcane” on Netflix. Now that the series has become such a big hit, all the studio bosses should have understood – and perhaps have long since knocked on the door themselves to see if they can’t cooperate somehow.
“LoL”: A brand that defines a generation
There should be a need for this at Riot Games in the future. Because “LoL” and the fantasy world of Runeterra, in which the stories are set, is so big, they are not afraid to make big plans. Spenley goes on to reveal: “I think we have a great opportunity to develop great stories of our own in this world, slowly building it into a brand that will define a whole generation.”
Concrete plans are not yet announced to the outside world. They probably want to move slowly, not rush things, make sure fans aren’t sick of the universe before it’s even really started. It will take some time until the universe is so big, but the course is currently being set.
More Netflix series and a big cinematic universe?
Already, numerous rumors are circulating. More animated series about characters, events and stories in the world of Runeterra are rumored to be coming in collaboration with Netflix. There are already plans for live-action movies, Which are working towards more: Because these are to result together in an own cinema universe, which competes with the MCU.
Spenley is still largely shirking clear announcements. What is known, however, is that her team is growing and that, for example, a position has been created that is to be understood as a counterpart to Kevin Feige’s role at Marvel: a person who manages a film universe and who pulls all the strings together. The Runeterra Cinematic Universe is probably closer than we think.
