Horde and Alliance, soon together in World of Warcraft – most of you would want that without hesitation. You have clearly decided.
Identification with and loyalty to one’s faction is an important pillar of World of Warcraft, both for Alliance players and Horde followers. Or … maybe not? We made a poll about the upcoming feature of “Cross Faction Play” and you participated in large numbers.
The result: the vast majority is already to allow cooperation with the enemy.
What is Cross-Faction Play?
A new feature announced for patch 9.2.5. Horde and Alliance will then be able to adventure together in groups as long as it is “closed” content – i.e. dungeons, raids, or PvP battles. Friends can thus play together across factions.
The result of our survey was quite clear:
More than 40% want the feature as standard
A full 42% of participants, which is equivalent to 392 votes, are of the clear opinion that Horde/Alliance interaction has long been superfluous. Such a feature should not just be an option, but the standard. Many are happy that more players will be available for group searching in the future and that joining raids will be easier even as an Alliance player.
Others are simply happy that they will be able to play with their loved ones in the future, such as Pjer Kretschmar, who wrote on Facebook:
My wife is Horde, I am Alliance. Finally, it’s going to be something again!
Aymen Jedir feels the same way:
I love this feature and can finally play together with a colleague again.
Niklas Gareis even sees this as the logical next step in the story.
Honestly, it’s about time. The concept of ‘Alli versus Horde’ is worn out and since we have to face the dangers that lie outside of Azeroth, meaning Void, Light, Legion, Death and so on, I think it’s time to stop being an Alli or a Horde, but a child of Azeroth. I think this is a good development.
More than a third want at least the option
Slightly fewer players, namely 35% (326 votes) think the feature is perfectly fine as long as it remains optional. At least, that’s how it’s intended by the developers. This is because the automatic player assignment means that you only ever end up in a group with players from the same faction.
Only those who manually search for fellow players and actively decide to do so can also form mixed groups of Horde and Alliance or join such groups. Ultimately, the decision is always up to the leader of the respective group.
Sui Enferum wrote about this via Facebook:
Is the only right thing to do. From a story point of view, it clearly makes sense. Anything else would be stupid. Just because a few isolated players now get a life crisis, you can apparently also make it optional.
Almost one in four is strictly against it
But not everyone approves of the upcoming feature, almost 23% (212 votes) clearly oppose the plans and believe that it will harm the game. The fact that Horde and Alliance are different groups should also be reflected in the gameplay and collaborative play should not be possible. For some, this even seems to be a step that heralds the end of WoW.
Sinophax writes:
And there WoW goes completely to the dogs … You can tell that they really don’t know what to bring anymore. Let them finish the game with dignity. It kind of hurts when you see what has become of the then so great game.
LikeADwarf puts it a little more accurately:
I personally (caution, subjective) think that the factions belong to a MMORPG and especially WoW.
Other MMORPGs I’ve played that didn’t have a faction system I always found kind of weird. I like belonging to a faction and fighting against other factions. Identification is a very big aspect of that and one of the things that makes WoW so great.
