The sexism lawsuit is changing things at #ActivisionBlizzard. Internally and externally, the publisher is trying to rehabilitate its image, as sponsors have bailed as a result of the lawsuit. Important shareholders also demanded more changes in the company.
What has happened inside the company since the indictment is revealed only in bits and pieces. So far, the external changes have been far more visible. In #WorldofWarcraft specifically, many transphobic and sexual references have been removed. Overwatch has also been hit by the change measures. There, the character of McCree will be renamed, as his namesake is implicated in the accusation.
It has been unclear what Activision Blizzard has done regarding their employees outside of their games. There is now a lengthy statement on the company website from Vice President for Corporate Affairs Fran Townsend :
“It doesn’t matter what rank you are or what job you do. If you’ve committed some kind of misconduct or are a leader who has tolerated a culture that doesn’t align with our values, we will take action.”
They say 20 employees have been fired so far and that “other types of disciplinary action have been imposed on more than 20 individuals”. However, it did not elaborate on what exactly these measures were and who exactly was fired.
In addition, also in the statement on the Activision Blizzard website, she gave more details on how to proceed internally at the company. The company wants to better protect employees from harassment and abuse in the future.
The company’s ethics and compliance team is to be expanded by three more positions – with another 19 positions in the future – in an effort to make Activision Blizzard a “more responsible workplace.” Activision Blizzard also plans to triple its training resources.
Until now, Townsend has not been considered a leader in protecting employees. That’s because she’s the same person who made herself very unpopular at the beginning of the lawsuit. In an email addressed to Activision Blizzard employees and staff, she called the California Department of Fair Employment and Housings Investigation “unfounded,” prompting employees to call for a work stoppage. She was also forced to delete her Twitter account after denying the charges there as well, blocking employees and journalists.
