Landing lots of hits in Fortnite isn’t that easy – normally. But on mobile, there’s a feature that feels like a cheat.

Playing Fortnite on mobile isn’t necessarily easy. It starts with the ability to install the game in the first place: Fortnite has been virtually banned from Apple devices since the legal battle between Epic and Apple by removing it from the AppStore.

However, it is once again possible to play Fortnite on iOS devices via the streaming service GeForce Now. You can rely on an extensive, freely customizable touch interface, which allows you to play the game reasonably comfortably.

Sure, those who are used to the controller or mouse & keyboard have to warm up to the touch control on the tablet or smartphone first. However, you quickly get the hang of the basic processes.

And then you can also rely on a pretty practical, if not overly powerful feature. The “automatic shooting”.

On Mobile, Fortnite shoots by itself

That’s the feature: If you start Fortnite in the mobile version via GeForce Now, you get three options on how you want to fire.

• Tap anywhere – so no matter where you press on the screen, you fire.
• Dedicated button – there is a dedicated fire button
• Auto fire – here the weapon just fires automatically when you aim at an enemy.

Auto fire mode is recommended – and damn powerful

It’s also the auto-fire option that is shown as “recommended”. And at least in the test run, it proved to be pretty damn useful.

That’s how powerful automatic firing is: If you play a few rounds in Fortnite’s no-build mode, you’ll quickly realize that automatic fire is insanely powerful.

Theoretically, you can take weapons like the volley assault rifle or a shotgun and then only need to follow the movements of the opponent with your finger. The automatic takes over the firing – and it hits pretty accurately.

The advantage is that you can simply concentrate completely on not losing the target. Then the opponent really only has the chance to shoot better in return or to take cover – otherwise that’s it.

Even situations where you can only see small hitboxes of the opponent, because he is hiding behind a tree, for example, the autofire grabs and then just hits the small target zone.

You save a button, so to speak – and that is very useful in the sometimes difficult handling of mobile shooters. By the way: The “6-finger claw” is well suited to reach all touch control buttons in mobile shooters.

Are there any limitations? Yes, there are – because otherwise the feature would be too strong overall.

• It doesn’t work with every weapon. For example, it doesn’t work with sniper rifles, you have to fire them manually.
• It doesn’t work over endless distances.
• The gun fires through until you lose aim or until it’s empty. Then you have to reload or change the weapon, and that can be awkward on touch. Also, reloading is always dangerous in open combat.
• If the opponent moves too well and fast, it is harder to hold the target.
• The feature isn’t quite as strong in Fortnite’s build mode – that’s where players can simply build their own cover to hide.
• Everything else has to be shot at “manually” – such as the new, deadly stones.

Despite these limitations, though, automatic firing has proven to be pretty darn powerful – so much so, in some cases, that it almost feels like cheating.

Aiming and hitting is noticeably easier with touch controls at times than on controller or keyboard & mouse.
