Wf there’s one game that pretty much all gamers can agree on at the moment, it’s “Fortnite: Battle Royale.” The co-op survival game can be played by multiple players simultaneously in a kind of virtual reality. It attracts more than 100 million people worldwide. The game has only been around since July 2017.

The game became popular with its fan community primarily through the so-called – Season s and events, in which new game content is available for a limited time or takes place in the game itself. EDM producer Marshmello now had a special idea for such an event.

On Saturday, together with the game makers, he organized the first in-game concert ever in “Fortnite” – that is, a live concert in the game.

Quite humbly, he posted on Instagram after the gig, “We made history today!”

For those who don’t know #Marshmello: The 26-year-old producer and #DJ from the U.S. civically hears on the name Chris Chomstock and could with songs like “Happier”, “Friends” and “Wolves” in recent years chart successes worldwide. Although never alone, but always with guests such as Bastille, Selena Gomez and DJ Khalid at his side – but the success counts.

His trademark is a cylindrical helmet with a smiley face, which is supposed to represent an oversized marshmallow. It can’t be missing from any performance, including the “Fortnite” concert, of course.

In the “Pleasant Park” area within the virtual gaming world, the concert took place at 8 p.m. sharp German time on Saturday. Millions of players had gathered for the event at the appointed place – ten million alone are said to have watched directly via “Fortnite”. It is not possible to say exactly how many there were, as there are no official statistics.

To get to the concert, players had to start a showtime mode and fight their way to the show in a kind of battle. During the missions along the way, players could earn various extras, for example to be able to clap particularly effectively or to have party lights with them. The game outfit could also be designed to match the Marshmello concert.

There was a lot of hype online – YouTubers and gamers around the world shared the event, some streaming their participation in the concert live on “Twitch”, a service known for its gaming content.

However, the whole thing went far more unspectacular than one would imagine. Marshmello entered the stage, greeted the fans with nice words and then reeled off his DJ set, as usual, including a few announcements and animations. Only everything was packed in the colorful-grey “Fortnite” animation world, including bouncing smiley and Marshmello heads.

After four songs, however, it was already over. The full length of the Marshmello concert can be seen afterwards on YouTube.

Epic Games, the developers of the game, are planning more such in-game concerts. Just a few hours after the Marshmello concert, a similar event already took place on Sunday to coincide with the Super Bowl. What exactly is still to come, however, has not yet been determined.

For people who have no experience with “Fortnite”, the spectacle seemed a bit strange to be honest. For once, there was a truce, everyone partied peacefully to EDM sounds, only to go back into attack mode right after the concert.
