In an official blog post, Microsoft CEO Phil Spencer shares his thoughts on the upcoming $70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. According to Spencer, Activision Blizzard games Overwatch, Diablo and Call of Duty will end up in the new Game Pass. But what about Blizzard’s MMO WoW?
In a blog post, Phil Spencer (CEO Microsoft Gaming) talks about how Microsoft sees the planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard and which games will go into Microsoft Game Pass after the $70 billion deal closes. The Microsoft CEO explicitly mentions the Activision Blizzard games Overwatch, Diablo and Call of Duty.
Blizzard’s MMO World of Warcraft is not mentioned (yet?). Our wish for a WoW in Game Pass might not come true. Either the MMO doesn’t fit into an additional Game Pass subscription with its subscription model, or Phil Spencer simply didn’t want to mention all franchises when listing the games. The deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard has not yet been finalized, as several authorities in different countries are still examining whether the deal is legal or whether Microsoft would get a monopoly in the video game sector.
New Game Pass primarily targets mobile gamers
Microsoft Game Pass aims to reach not only PC and console gamers in the future. In his statement, Phil Spencer mentions that the largest and fastest growing segment of the videogame industry is mobile platforms. “We’re expanding choice for gamers in two ways: by creating Game Pass, which gives gamers a subscription option, and by bringing more games to mobile platforms, including through our cloud game streaming technology.
Subscription services like Game Pass make games more affordable and help gamers from around the world find their next favorite game. Game Pass gives developers the ability to offer more games to more players, not fewer. We intend, Activision Blizzard’s popular collection of games – including Overwatch, Diablo and Call of Duty. – available in Game Pass and grow these gaming communities. We hope to continue to grow Game Pass by providing even more value to players and expanding its appeal to mobile and all connected devices.” Do you think WoW will still end up in Game Pass?
