Mei finally becomes a tank, as Overwatch players have demanded. But unfortunately in the wrong game, namely Heroes of the Storm…
Of all the heroes Overwatch has to offer, Mei is probably the most hated. After all, who likes being frozen by a rather petite girl and then executed with an icicle on her face?
Apparently, Blizzard thought that not enough players had experienced Mei’s horror firsthand. In the future, she will become a character in Heroes of the Storm as well. Here is her official announcement trailer:
What can Mei do in HotS? Unlike Mei in Overwatch, the icy woman in Heros of the Storm is a true tank. She can:
- Charge forward on an ice track. Enemies at the end of the track are slowed down and pushed back.
- Cast your small bot, which slows and damages enemies in an area. The last tick deals bonus damage and stuns for a short time.
- Use a block of ice. This makes her unstoppable, grants her temporary shields, and heals her for a medium amount.
- As the first Ultimate, she can create an ice wall. This blocks enemy movement, just like in Overwatch. However, if an enemy is hit directly by the wall, they will be frozen for a short time and then slowed down.
- The second ultimate is a giant snowball. It rolls in a straight line and collects all enemy heroes in its path. At the end of the track, the heroes are then spat out and briefly stunned.

Players want Mei as a tank, but in Overwatch.
There are a lot of comments under the introduction of Mei as a new character for Heros of the Storm. Many of them want Mei to be a tank in Overwatch as well. Here are some excerpts of the opinions:

Dr. Fish PhD says, “A stable tank, huh? Maybe Blizzard should take some tips from themselves there.”
Two games, double the hate. Mei.
What’s the argument for Mei as a tank in Overwatch? Mei basically has a kit of abilities more suited to a tank than a DPS character. For example, she has slow and stun with her primary weapon, as well as her ultimate. The ice wall also provides protection and blocks enemy movement. Add to that the ice block, which makes her invulnerable and even heals her. All of these are features that should actually make her a tank in Overwatch.
Mei, by the way, is the first new hero in half a year – Deathwing came last.
Anyway: In the future you can hate Mei and her freezing mechanics in two Blizzard games at once. Because nothing is more frustrating than being frozen by her over and over again.
