On Sunday morning, League of Legends held the final of the MSI 2022 tournament in Busan. South Korean champions T1 narrowly lost to the Chinese from RNG by 2-3. After the match, T1’s coach had found a reason: The defeat in the coin toss, which decided the side selection, was to blame. RNG had won that and thus also gained an advantage in the match, as the coach of the South Koreans, Choi “Polt” Seong-hun, believes.
What does the coin toss decide? Just like in soccer, the coin toss in LoL decides the choice of sides. The winner of the coin toss before the game has the choice of which side of the map to start on.
The Chinese from RNG chose the “blue” side – T1 had to play on “red” in match 1. After each match the side is changed. Because the final went over 5 matches, RNG played Match 1, 3 and 5 as “blue”. RNG won all their matches from the blue side.
What is the difference between “blue” and “red”? There are some marginal differences in map design. But what is controversially discussed: Which side is safer to attack Baron or Dragon, or who is better at getting their buffs, depending on the side.
The main difference, however, is in the draft. Here it is decided which of the 5 out of 160 champions in LoL the teams will play:
- The “red” side starts by banning champions that the opponent cannot pick
- But then it’s the “blue” side’s turn to pick the first champions they want to play themselves
Coach thinks T1 would have won if they played “blue” 3 times
That’s what the coach says: In a press conference after the final said the head coach of T1, Polt:
The team that could choose a side always chose blue:
I think the blue side has advantages. We tried to prepare for the red side as much as possible, but we couldn’t win the match.
Asked about the performance of his own players and reasons for defeat, Polt said:
The reason why we lost was, as I just said: we were not allowed to play 3-times on the blue side.
Star player Faker does not talk about “blue” and “red”. The three-time world champion said in his statement that while none of the RNG players stood out, he was also a bit disappointed with T1’s performance and wanted to focus on that.
LoL is not only known for its e-sports, but also for great cinematics:
What did the opponents say? They were in a good mood. The midlaner of RNG, Xiaohu, said:
“The blue side can be OP and so can the red side. Even in the players we lost on red, it was only because of our champion selection.”
Supporter Ming teases a bit that T1’s coach was so confident of victory beforehand after all:
“On media day, Polt said they would win 3-0, but actually only 3-1 because they lose the coin toss. I don’t even know why he mentioned that again.”
In fact, throughout the tournament, the blue side had a statistical advantage: blue won 53.2% of the time.
Coach faces criticism over draft
Here’s what’s behind it: As coach, Polt is responsible for his team’s draft. He was heavily criticized by fans for not banning the heroine “Gwen”, even though the top laner of RNG, Bin, chose her every time and was convincing with her in all his team’s victories.
Some fans believe: Polt only needed to ban Gwen to lead T1 to victory lane.
However, the head of T1, Joe Marsh, takes his coaches in defense: They would draft together. This was not the coaches’ fault (via twitter). This is how Europe’s Team G2 handled its defeat.
G2 takes own defeat casually
By the way, G2 had the nicest reaction to a defeat: There they mocked after getting spanked by T1: Riot Games had announced that the match would be cancelled because a bunch of ducks had flown into the venue. G2 would now have to play T1 in a basketball match.
This alludes on the one hand to the small body size of the Koreans, and on the other hand to the “cancellation” of 3 preliminary round matches at RNG by Riot Games:
Did you know that ……. ???

In this building there are many windows from which you can shoot enemies. Behind the building in the middle is a house on the American side, where two staircases each lead to the first piece. To the north-east is another house with two large windows on the first floor, one facing the centre of the American side and one facing north.
