LoL: US team first buys expensive star, then young Korean, fails with everything

The US team Cloud 9 had dared a radical change in of Legends: They rely on young players from South Korea and sorted out the old veterans in rows. After a disappointing – Season , they are now taking the opposite approach and bringing back experienced players from Europe, including a 27-year-old Dane.

Cloud9 has always been the modern, somehow different team in . With Sneaky, they had a colorful franchise player for years who liked to cross-dress.

But lately they’ve been overdoing it a bit with the changes.

3 completely different identities in 1.5 years

This is what the team looked like a year ago: A year ago Cloud9 was a team with 3 outstanding players: They had gotten the Croatian Perkz for a lot of money. On the botlane, the strong Dane Zven raged with his supporter Vulcan, who was considered a huge talent in North America.

But the weak points of the team were jungler Blaber and toplaner Fudge, who played solidly but not outstandingly.

Blaber once had such a terrible play that Zven apparently snapped and was then banished to the “Academy League” where he ran amok.

With the team, Cloud9 finished second in the LCS – but that wasn’t enough, so they completely rebuilt the team. This was necessary because Perkz left for Europe after the chaos year.

Perhaps the most exciting story in LoL is about a “reformed” troll:

How the worst troll on Twitch became the face of League of Legends

Cloud9 becomes the Korea outpost in the LCS

This is how the team looked like half a year ago: Before the 2022 spring split, the team radically focused on Korea: they did a boot camp in Seoul, brought in an innovative coach who had trained in Korea, and relied on a young hungry team peppered with Koreans:

  • So they replaced the experienced Dane Zven on the botlane with the young Korean Berserker (18)
  • Summit (23), another Korean talent, moved to the toplane – Australian Fudge had to move to the midlane, where the European and very expensive star player Perkz was lost.
  • as a supporter now played Winsome, a US-American with Korean roots

In general, they were radical, wanting to a “10-man” squad now, with players of equal caliber, to allow for optimal .

Summit was voted the best player in the U.S.

Here’s how that turned out: The team had a strong run in the regular – Season , with South Korea’s Summit even being named the best player in the U.S. at the top lane. But there were cracks there: For example, the coach left the team early for unspecified reasons.

Cloud9 then collapsed in the playoffs, losing all 6 games.

MVP Summit left the team again after only 6 months – just like Winsome. Allegedly the players were even offered for free to all other teams in the US-LIGA LCS.

LoL: An extraordinary coach shakes up League of Legends with crazy plans

Where do we go from here? Cloud9 makes a complete about-face before the summer of 2022:

  • Only Berserk remains from the South Korea offensive.
  • The support part is now to be played by Zven (24), the skilled botlaner with a penchant for penta kills is to become Berserker’s partner.
  • Midlaner Fudge moves back to the toplane to replace Summit.
  • For the Midlane they now bring back Jensen of all people, the 27-year-old Dane, already played for Cloud9 from 2015 to 2019. Was but last as with Team Liquid sorted out and had remained clubless in the spring of 2022.

So after Cloud9 relied on young Koreans in the spring of 2022, older Danes are now expected to do the job.

In Jensen’s case, people were already wondering 2 years ago why he got so much money again – a year later, he was replaced by his former team:
