On Sunday, the grand final of the Spring Split 2022 in the highest German league in League of Legends took place. The teams Eintracht Spandau and GamerLegion met each other. Just a few weeks ago, Eintracht Spandau managed a 3-0 win against their rivals. In the grand final, however, GamerLegion turned the tables.
How did Eintracht Spandau’s – Season go? The whole Spring Split was up and down for the team of HandOfBlood and his agency INSTINCT3:
- To start, the team conceded 4 losses in a row. Discussions followed, because HandOfBlood as president proclaimed the goal to play for a title at the EU Masters in the future. This is the biggest European tournament, right behind the LEC.
- At the halfway point of the – Season , the team was in 8th place with 4 wins and 5 losses. However, at least 6th place had to be achieved to at least make the playoffs and have a chance to get into the EU Masters.
- At the end of the – Season , however, Eintracht Spandau really turned up the heat. They were able to win 8 games in a row. In doing so, they always relied on the same strategy. In the end, it was enough for 2nd place and thus for the upper bracket of the playoffs.
- There, on March 8, they faced GamerLegion, the first-place team in the league, against whom they had lost both matches in the regular competition. However, they almost easily swept the team 3-0.
- Via the looser bracket, GamerLegion then managed to advance to the final and got the rematch against Eintracht Spandau. And that was already before the start and not a good star, at least from the point of view of HandOfBlood and his team.
GamerLegion dominated directly the first match
How did the first match go? GamerLegion was able to put together a combo in the first draft that analysts already thought was very dangerous and much stronger than Eintracht Spandau’s champions. They all gave the victory to GamerLegion.
And so it came to pass. From the beginning Eintracht Spandau had no chance. Although the big teamfights were missing and at minute 15 it was only 1:1 in kills, GamerLegion was able to gain a noticeable gold lead and two dragons via platings and good farm.
Then at minute 22, jungler D4nka wins the teamfight with a good Hecarim ulti and supporter Visdom with a Thresh hook. They secure kills on Kynetic and Prime in a flash, shutting down the enemy botlane. This is followed by an uncoordinated action by the remaining Eintracht Spandau players.
After a short break, the team fight then ends with 5:1 kills for GamerLegion. A Baron, the Dragon Soul and the victory at minute 31 follow.
How did the second match go? Eintracht Spandau gets off to a better start this time, taking a 2-1 lead in kills after a team fight in the botlane. At minute 15 it’s 2:2 in kills and 1:1 in dragons, but Spandau is just under 2,000 gold in the lead.
At minute 19, however, Spandau plays too aggressively and runs into a 4v5 team fight. Most notably, GamerLegion’s midlaner ESCIK lands a good flank with Ahri and secures two important kills. This picture then continues in the next minutes, where Eintracht Spandau keeps looking for fights, but GamerLegion turns them and emerges victorious.
The casters especially see the problem with toplane pick from Pride, who is out with Dr Mundo. This one, they say, is tanky but brings nothing else to the team. The pick was said to be the reason why some of the team fights were lost.
However, Eintracht Spandau fights to the end, was in the lead by a razor-thin margin with the gold at minute 40 despite 18:23 kills and fewer towers. However, they make another wrong decision and secure a Baron, while GamerLegion simply tears into the Berliners’ base and destroys the Nexus before the team was back in time.
GamerLegion, Eintracht Spandau and the dance for the Nexus
How did the third match go? The last match of the series offers a real heartbeat finale. Eintracht Spandau dominates the beginning again with two kills and an easy gold lead. But at minute 9 GamerLegion turns the tide.
Sacre splits Spandau’s team with the Rumble-Ultimate Equalizer, securing three kills and the Herald. As the match progresses, GamerLegion wins most of the teamfights, but Spandau stays ahead in the gold. Especially Jinjo makes a really good match on Jhin and had a stat of 13/4/6 at minute 33, which is excellent for a botlaner.
And then it gets curious. At minute 39 GamerLegion can destroy the first inhibitor in the middle of Eintracht Spandau. After that, they keep running against the Nexus towers and an enemy team outnumbered. However, Eintracht Spandau defends and makes pinpricks of their own. So get the enemy inhibitor on the botlane in a strong backdoor action by Pride. Later, Pride kept securing kills to prevent the onslaught on its own base, and even a Nexus tower at minute 43.
GamerLegion fails to finish the game for what feels like an eternity. This is almost reminiscent of the league match between Gamer Legion and Spandau, but where HandOfBlood’s team narrowly missed out on victory.
It takes until minute 47 for Spandau’s suffering to come to an end. GamerLegion, however, can cheer the title win.
Eintracht Spandau struggled in advance with injury and illness misfortune
What was wrong with Eintracht Spandau? Even before the match, HandOfBlood’s LoL team was struggling with some problems:
- Toplaner Pride pulled a muscle in his leg one day before the final, but was able to participate in the final.
- The Botlaner Kynetic revealed that already the training matches did not go well.
- For their own livestream to the grand finale, Influencers Johnny and Kalle Koschinsky dropped out, both having to cancel due to illness.
The players and officials were also visibly disappointed on their Twitter channels. Nevertheless, the team celebrated itself for the successes around the – Season , a strong second place and especially the reach that the team was able to build.
Both Pride and HandOfBlood promised that Eintracht will strike back at the upcoming EU Masters.
Finale sets new record: For those responsible for Prime League, however, the final was a huge success despite GamerLegion’s dominance. On Twitch, 38,187 people watched simultaneously at the peak, a new record for the channel.
On Eintracht Spandau’s channel, 35,271 viewers also watched the event in peak. That was still the second-best figure. However, the numbers remained constant over several hours above 30,000 (via Sullygnome).
EU Masters starts in April and both teams are there
What exactly does the outcome of the match mean? GamerLegion is now officially the winner of the Spring Split 2022. They have the title and the cup for sure.
However, both GamerLegion and Eintracht Spandau move directly into the main event of EU Masters Spring 2022. So they don’t have to play the first play-in phase. The German team in third place, Unicorns of Love Sexy Edition, has qualified for that.
The EU Masters start on April 4 and run until May 7. A total of 150,000 euros await in the prize pool, which will be divided among the best teams.
Who will the teams meet at the EU Masters? The best teams from the other European leagues. One of the favorites for the title is the French team Karmine Corp. They have signed the well-known AD-Carry Rekkles, who has played several times for Fnatic at the LoL Worlds.
Another strong team comes from Spain, Fnatic TQ. This is Fnatic’s second team, featuring talents and substitutes from the main team. They dominated the Spanish league with 16-2 and also won the Upper Bracket in the playoffs against Team Barcelona eSports with 3-1.
