Over the weekend, from March 18 to March 20, a lot of players received a message that their account was permanently banned when logging into the popular MOBA League of Legends. The ban caused a slight panic in front of the home PC. Riot Games has now commented on the “mass bans” and somehow they seem at a loss themselves.
This is the discussion:
- On Friday, one of the most important e-sports journalists on LoL, Jacob Wolf, came forward: his account was permanently banned. He is scrupulously trying to be the best and friendliest player he can be. After all, his job depends on the game. He could not explain this at all (via twitter).
- It became clear in the comments that many other players felt the same way: their accounts were also banned without them having done anything.
- Riot Games’ support was flooded with inquiries about the bans. At first, they brusquely dismissed the questions, then the tone changed.
Twitch streamer gets banned from LoL during 24-hour marathon
Riot Games brusquely fends off complaints at first, then clarifies
Here’s what Riot Game says: The situation is a bit difficult.
Riot Games support has been receiving tweets all weekend from angry users in various languages contacting Riot saying their account in LoL has been permanently banned.
At the beginning, Riot Games said consistently: they could not comment on the bans. They wouldn’t discuss bans at support. That was not their topic.
News of the perma-ban was apparently a “system error” at Riot
In the night from Sunday to Monday, however, the developers’ response changed: according to Riot Games, a message was published “by mistake” that players’ accounts were permanently banned. However, this was only a “glitch”.
Hi. Thank you so much for contacting us. I understand that it must be very confusing that you suddenly see the ban message for your account. It could be just zn a visual problem. Try to log in again and if you are still banned, write us a ticket.
It also says: One of Riot’s systems apparently would have displayed this message due to an error at Riot.
What can you do about the perma-ban in LoL? On reddit, there is now talk of a “ban glitch” – that is, a visual error with no real consequence.
A YouTuber has also addressed the issue. The YouTuber Exile says:
- Who was banned, should simply log in again and again until it goes
- Anyone who continues to experience problems should check their account to see if they really have been banned (via support-LoL)
Some players must have been panicking over the weekend that they would have to do without their favorite game. Understandable: Many players have put a lot of money and time into their LoL account.
