League of Legends is currently in Pre– Season 12, which is used by Riot Games to bring some major innovations or experiments. On the test server there is now an adapted version of the Summoner Spell “Teleport”, which is not well received.
What is this spell?
Teleport is a special ability that allows a player to teleport to a friendly Tower, Minion, or Ward. This spell is especially popular on the toplane, so that the player can also influence what happens on the other lanes there.
Teleport is usually used for this purpose:
- To quickly return to one’s own lane after a death or a shopping trip
- To perform a gank on the botlane
- To join in the fight for the dragon
But this flexibility no longer seems to be wanted in the future.
What is changing?
On the test server, the teleport can now only be used on friendly structures – i.e. towers. Only after 14 minutes there is an “Unleashed” version of the teleport, which then also allows the jump to Minions or Wards.
However, the casting time has been reduced from 4.5 to 4 seconds.
A major intervention in the earlygame and a strong separation of the toplane.
How is the change received?
In reddit, many players react rather negatively to the change. Because it strongly interferes with the earlygame of a match. There, the teleport was a popular method to help the own botlane and also forced the players in the toplane to make a decision:
- Would I rather come back to the lane quickly to farm?
- Do I keep the teleport to help the other lanes?
- In addition, the teleport could also be used to change the status of the lane because the Minion that is teleported to stops moving and also briefly slows down the Minions that follow and also because it becomes invulnerable.
It is precisely such decisions that will be taken away from the players in the future, criticizes the user PhantomRager (via reddit), for example:
I’m a toplane player and I don’t like this change. Finding the right time to make the TP a botlane takes skill. You can’t just dare the TP to the botlane because if you don’t get anything defeated, the enemy has 2 free Waves and at least one Plating. Or he will also get into the botlane with you. It’s not like teleporting to the botlane was free.
Reddit user SirVampyr also feels that LoL in general is allowing less and less freedom of choice: “Maybe I’m just a LoL boomer since I’ve been playing since 2010, but the way they’re [die Entwickler] getting more and more specific with their changes kind of destroys the discovery of new tactics and options.”
Players now fear that for the first 14 minutes, players will only be on their toplane and will have no impact on the gameplay.

Some players even scoff that Riot is completely separating the toplane from the game and protecting the botlane more and more in return. Because the influence of the toplane on the game is quite small, if they can help neither in the botlane, nor the dragon.
Some players therefore joke that the Toplane could be put into its own game:
However, the changes are still only on the test server. Patch 11.25 will show whether they will actually be included in League of Legends. It is scheduled to be released on December 22.
