LoL hints at the next 3 new champs

The MOBA League of Legends now has 159 champions: with Zeri and Renata Glasc, the last two new ones came into the game in January and February 2022. But there are further plans. In a developer post, they now hint at the next 3 heroes. A new Jungler, Toplaner and Botlaner could still come to LoL in 2022.

How many new heroes come to LoL per year? Champions in LoL are in development for a long time and then come into the game at different times. The plan is more or less to bring five new champs every year, ideally one for each role. That works out halfway as well:

2019 there were 5 champs
2020 came 6 new
2021 there were only 4
In 2022 with Zeri and Renata Glasc already 2 new Heden appeared, a Botlaner and a Supporer – Riot hints that 3 more new Legends could still be added in 2022, but doesn’t say that firmly yet. That should be Jungler, another Botlaner and a Toplaner.

It now says in a new blogpost:

In the wake of the latest champion plans, I mentioned that we would be scaling back production of new champions a bit for a while. We want to make sure that each champion gets the time and attention they need to shine when they are released, even if that means we can no longer manage to develop a new character for each position every year. Although we don’t yet know exactly how many champions we’ll release this year, it should be about the same as last year.

So it could be that all 3 heroes that Riot is outlining now will still come in 2022, making it 5 heroes. But maybe it will only be 4 like in 2021.

I guess they don’t know that themselves at Riot yet.

Next Jungler sounds like Kerrigan from StarCraft

Here’s what we know about the next Jungler: The next new heroine is to be a Jungler who comes from the Void. It is said to be an empress to whom it is necessary to submit.

It is said to have “true elegance, true beauty, and the true face of the Void.” It is said to be a “Skirmish Jungler”.

Back in January 20221, people had speculated on reddit that the new jungler in LoL could function like a sort of “Kerrigan” from StarCraft 2, taking over the map with voidling creatures. A kind of “evil brood mother” that takes possession of everything.

Happy but deadly – Is that a sea otter waddling onto the botlane?

Here’s what you know about the next botlaner: According to LoL, the next Botlaner will be a “colorful but deadly stranger” who has come to Runeterra across the sea.

Apparently, the new hero laughs a lot and has a “water and fog” motif. In January it was hinted that it was an “unconventional botlaner” that awaits us.

On reddit, one jokes: this could perhaps be a laughing sea otter, with which you can then go “full Disney” by playing it together with Zoe and Yuumi.

In LoL there are some champions that resemble animals like Volibear (bear), Renektorn (crocodile) or Anivia (bird). An otter could fit in nicely there.

Could he serve as a model for the next botlaner in LoL?

New top laner could fill cultural gap

Here’s what’s known about the next Toplaner: The last new champion is to be a Toplaner, he is to be the “Pride of Nazumah”, a region of Shurima that no one has visited yet.

People suggest it could be a tank from a desert region. On reddit, people suspect it could be a proud warrior with a lion motif. Others hope to get a champion representing the Iridian region of North Africa.

Such a hero seems to be what many are waiting for, it could fill a void in LoL.

New heroes in LoL are delicate, often Riot doesn’t get the balancing quite perfect and has to readjust:
