Competitive games like WarZone, Fortnite or #CS:GO often attract cheaters and hackers. Even in the PvP of #MMORPGs, this happens regularly. The MOBA League of Legends, however, is almost completely free of hackers. What is the reason for that?
How many hackers are there in LoL?
Very few. On YouTube you can find some videos and montages from 2014 to 2018, where there were still a few major problems. But in the last three years, hardly anything can be found on hackers.
The situation is different in CoD Warzone, for example. There is even hacking in tournaments with $100,000 prize money.
In the LoL community, the topic of hacks was discussed a few days ago. There, the players name various reasons why hackers and scripters have such a hard time in LoL.
An aim bot is not enough to win the game
What do the players use to explain the missing hackers?
Players see one reason for the lack of hackers in the basic gameplay of League of Legends. It is very much dependent on chance and other players.
A bot or special hacks wouldn’t help much there, because in case of doubt, they only bring you to a high Elo, where the player goes down even with special hacks, because he doesn’t master other basics.
User Helpless-Dane writes something like:
Having the perfect aim in Counter Strike is a much bigger advantage than being able to kite or dodge perfectly in LoL.
Because if you’re a dumb AD carry, you’re going to die like a dumb AD carry. That doesn’t really change just because you can move well. If Nautilus catches you with a Flash > Hook, you’re going to get hit. And scripting will only get you into an elo where your stupidity and cluelessness about your positioning will be your downfall.
Moreover, even these “perfect hacks” are supposed to be easily tricked by players. For example, if you jump slightly behind the opponent with Malphite-Ultimate, the hack will dodge forward. However, the rest of the opposing team can sometimes be standing there and the hack is already safely eliminated.
Also, a wall hack wouldn’t have that big of an impact in LoL because many champions can jump over walls or fire abilities over walls anyway.
Do aim bots work?
One hack that has been around for a long time was an Aim-Bot for the champion Xerath. It has a lot of skill shots where aiming is important, making it perfect for hacks.
But even that only works in the laning phase. In team fights at the latest, the script was overwhelmed and the opposing team could quickly take out the player. There, the Xerath was said to be nothing more than a “walking jungle camp” despite 8/0 in lane (via reddit).
Players with real skill would always prevail against bots, players say. At the latest in the endgame, where decisions have to be made and you have to work together as a team, a hacker is supposed to be a disadvantage due to his lack of skill.
If you want to watch some gameplay of Xerath, you can find a video of the German player Noway4u here, who of course doesn’t use a bot:
Riot took strong action against hackers, directly bans all hardware
Do the developers have something to do with the few hackers?
According to the community, yes. One aspect is said to be server-side development. The client doesn’t send info about the position of the enemies until they are visible on your end. So you can’t cheat regarding the fogged map.
In – Season 4 there were some scripts that reset the cooldown of the Flash spell again and again. This is now also prevented by the server-side programming.
In general, there were many suspensions due to scripting in 2014 and 2015.
Hardware bans and lawsuits:
If someone cheats in LoL, they will be permanently banned. However, these bans apply not only to the one account, but all accounts related to the person.
There is also a direct hardware ban. This makes it difficult to create new accounts.
Additionally, Riot Games has already sued several cheat developers and sellers.
- In 2017, they won a year-long legal battle and were awarded $10 million (via TechTimes).
- In 2020, Riot Games and Bungie jointly sued a manufacturer (via MarksGray) and were awarded $2 million.
- 2022 saw another lawsuit against a cheat seller at Valorant (via Dexerto).
In addition, Riot Games itself is keen on closing loopholes in the system. Thus, players who manage to hack into Valorant were offered $100,000 as a reward.
Is there also criticism of Riot Games?
Yes, Riot’s anti-cheat system reads which programs are running in the background. If a cheat program is found, the game crashes immediately.
However, some players feel it is too much of an invasion of privacy, as all programs that are actively running on your PC can be seen. However, you agree to this in the Terms of Service.
Players cheat in the flex queue
Are there no cheaters in LoL?
Yes there are, but cheating is done “differently” here. So-called wintrading is used to buy victories in the rankings. In addition, there is no lock in the flex queue for differences in the rankings, so that the strongest players can play together with friends on freshly created accounts to boost them.
However, this does not affect quality in SoloQ or matches outside of the rankings.
How often have you encountered hackers or cheaters in LoL? Or have you even been spared from them completely? Feel free to post it in the comments.
A German player managed to almost never die in the Spring Split of the LEC – and that without any hacks.
