In League of Legends, there has been an “uber” team in recent years: DWG KIA, previously known as Damwon Gaming. The South Koreans took the World Championship in 2020 and made it to the finals of LoL Worlds in 2021. Now, however, only the hard core of DWG KIA remains: Midlaner Showmaker and Jungler Canyon. The rest will leave and be replaced by players who have not yet made a big name for themselves.
What is special about DWG KIA?
- The South Koreans were undoubtedly the most dominant team in League of Legends over the last 2 years: they were the benchmark against which all other teams had to measure themselves. After paying an apprenticeship fee in 2019 and crumbling under the pressure of a live audience, from 2020 they were almost unstoppable
- Midlaner Showmaker is considered the best player in the world – his jungler Canyon a dominant force. In addition, they were able to field a strong botlane with Support Beryl and ADC Ghost. On the top lane, 2019 Nuguri and 2020 Khan mostly played a strong role.
- In 2022, of the 5 players, only the core duo of Showmaker and Canyon remain. The other players leave DWG KIA.
LoL has 2 bosses at Worlds that no one has been able to kill yet.
Where do the 3 players go?
Top laner Khan will not be playing professional LoL in 2022. The South Korean has to start his mandatory military service. Because there is compulsory military service in South Korea, many professional careers end in their mid-20s. A South Korean politician suggested that Faker should be spared compulsory military service and treated like an Olympian or a great artist.
ADC Ghost (22) goes to NS RedForce after much drama. There had been some commotion and misunderstanding beforehand.
But it is quite surprising that the supporter BeryL (24) leaves. His contract expired – just like Canyon’s and Showmaker’s. But he will not play for DWG KIA in 2022. Where he goes is not yet clear.
Khan ends his LoL career without the Worlds title he chased for the last few years with 3 top teams.
Who is new coming?
According to rumors, DWG KIA has tried to persuade Nuguri to come back to the Toplaner. But this is not going to happen. In comes top laner Burdol (17), who played for Gen G. last year but wasn’t in the starting lineup. They made it to the Hablfinals of the World. So that’s more of a junior solution.
Ghost, who moves to Nongshim Redforce, is replaced as ADC by “deokdam”: He comes from Nongshim Redforce. The two ADCs practically swap positions. Dekdam is 21 years old, one year younger than Ghost, but has not played for any “big team” yet.
As a supporter, they sign “Kellin”, a 20-year-old who also came from NS RedForce.
Was there no money left for other players besides the 2 top stars?
That’s what’s behind it:
This will be interesting to see how DWG KIA does and if by the end of 2022 they reach the level they had the last 2 years.
Surely the pressure on Showmaker and Canyon to deliver and the team to “carrien” by the changes even higher. One has got himself there no “big names”.
One can suspect that Showmaker and Canyon collected huge salary increases to prevent the stars from moving to China. Perhaps under the circumstances there wasn’t an insane amount of money left for the other 3 positions.
