US team Cloud9 is discovering the Korean in them in League of Legends. They have signed two new Korean players and brought in US American Nick “LS” De Cesare as coach from Korea. He is considered a LoL mastermind who has his own ideas. One of his first official acts: He kicked the team’s star botlaner, Jesper “Zven” Svnennigsen, out of the squad; there’s not even room for Zven in the Academy team. The 24-year-old is considered one of the best botlaners in the USA.
How it went for Cloud9 2020:
- For 2020, Cloud9’s strategy was more or less: we’ll get the best players from Europe and then it will be something. Besides the strong ADC from Denmark, Zven, probably the best player ever from Europe, the Croatian Perkz, played in the midlane. Perkz is said to have cost around 5 million US dollars.
- However, the team had big problems in 2020. ADC Zven was banished to the Academy team because of problems with his attitude – there Zven ran completely amok and demolished the US League LCS junior team until they let him back on the team.
- Cloud9 then caught on, made it to the Worlds, where they at least made it through the preliminary round – the only US team to do so. But in the quarterfinals it was over. Still, the team with Perkz and Zven looked pretty good. Jungler Blaber was considered a weak point – allegedly, a slip-up by him caused Zven to freak out, and he was banned from the team.
Twitch streamer cries when he sees he’s now part of LoL: “I’m not a random anymore”.
Cloud9 becomes the “outpost” for Korea in 2022
What’s going on now in 2021? Super star Perkz is gone – he left for Europe after one year. He probably didn’t have a good year at Cloud9. The whole drama around Zven apparently went against his grain.
For Perkz, the previous top laner Fudge is now to move to the middle, which is a pretty weird decision in itself. You replace one of the best midlaners in the west with someone who has never played the role professionally.
They also brought in two new South Koreans, Summit (top lane) and Berserk (bot lane), even though they didn’t really have much room for legionnaires anymore. Because there is a “foreigner limit” for non-US players in the LCS. On the botlane you had with Zven an outstanding player – on the top lane with Fudge a top performer. So you got 2 players for positions for which you actually didn’t bring any new games.
In addition Cloud9 signed the analyst “LS” from Korea as new head coach. The US-American is known for his controversial views. The thinks LoL completely different than most others. He believes, for example, that players and coaches in LoL have no idea how the draft actually works. For that, they need specialists who come from strategic card games – like him.
New coach throws out star players – relies on “old” Academy team
This is now the first action of LS: Cloud9 has now unveiled the starting lineups for the main team and the Academy team. And the surprise: the Dane Zven is not in either team.
- In the main team he was replaced by 18-year-old Korean Berserk.
- In the Academy team, the Australian K1ng is supposed to play. However, he is already 23 and thus 5 years older than the regular player, which seems somehow strange for a “junior talent”. “Normally, players in the Academy team should be younger than the regular players they are supposed to replace at some point.
LS explains that they already have 2 Koreans on the main team with Summit and Berserk, so they only have one “import slot” left. This slot is needed in the Academy team for “Malice”, a 24 year old Swedish jungler. He needs playing experience.
Zven will be available for practice matches in the Academy team.
Has hot, innovative ideas – hopefully he will succeed: Nick “LS” De Cesare.
“Having a sister team is like cheating”.
Here’s what’s behind it: The decision is – to say the least – really courageous.
Basically, you’re cold-calling one of the best players in the US and giving as a totally weird reason that a 24 year old replacement youngster needs game practice. But then Zven is supposed to play in scrimmages, which will result in the actual replacement ADC, K1ng, not getting any training and not being able to develop.
It is obvious that Cloud9 simply doesn’t want Zven in the team anymore – but sportive reasons might not play a role for that, but rather some atmospheric difficulties.
Also the fact that in the Academy team some players start, who are clearly older than the players in the main team, runs against the normal convention. For example, the top laner on the Academy team is already 27 years old. LS explains that they want to have as strong an Academy team as possible so that there are strong training battles and so that everyone develops.
Replacement jungler as new momentum opponent – Malice thinks US jungler is weak
New Academy jungler Malice (24) is considered a friend of LS and was with him in South Korea at bbq Olivers. The Swede is more or less considered a “failed LoL super talent” whose attitude kept causing him problems.
Malice says, “They are now planning to introduce new types of scrimmages that they are bringing from Korea. These are to make sure that teams develop in the best way:
- When there are problems in the early game, you do blitz scrimmages.
- When there are difficulties with communications, silence scrimmages are made
- If you see trouble in team fights, you play ARAM with 10 people
Having your own sister team is like cheating, says Malice (via inven). Anyway, he thinks that in the USA almost only weak junglers are playing, and he will take them apart easily. Only Inspired, the Polish jungler from Evil Geniuses, seems to take him seriously.
Academy team as a sparring partner, not a hotbed of young talent
From the lineup and decisions, the idea is that Cloud9 no longer has an Academy team, but is putting together a “sister team”, as a training opponent for the main team. So you don’t use the team as a junior forge, but as a sparring partner.
It’s quite a weird situation brewing at Cloud9. If the team doesn’t succeed under LS, the calls to bring Zven back into the lineup are likely to get loud quickly.
A lot will now depend on how well Fudge does in the mid-lane and how strong the two new Koreans really are. The decision to put 23-year-old and 27-year-old in the Academy team will hopefully prove to be a stroke of genius.
Cloud9 is reinventing themselves every year right now. In 2020, they had a lot of success with it:
