LEGO Overwatch set won’t appear for now, partnership with Blizzard under scrutiny

After we recently reported on the first images of an upcoming set that should have been released in February 2022 (after already being postponed several times), there is now another setback for the Overwatch themed world: according to a statement from LEGO, the partnership with Activision , the publisher and developer studio behind Overwatch, is currently under review and the set will not be released for the time being.

Regarding the reasons for this decision, we don’t need to speculate, as LEGO is clearly addressing the workplace culture at here. The company has been under criticism for sexual harassment in the workplace and for its toxic work environment since a lawsuit came to light. We have translated LEGO’s statement for you:

We are currently reviewing our partnership with Activision Blizzard as we have concerns about the progress being made to address ongoing allegations related to workplace culture, specifically the treatment of female colleagues and the creation of a diverse and inclusive environment. While we complete the review, we will suspend the release of any LEGO product that was scheduled to launch on February 1, 2022.

Statement in the original (English)

We are currently reviewing our partnership with Activision Blizzard, given concerns about the progress being made to address continuing allegations regarding workplace culture, especially the treatment of female colleagues and creating a diverse and inclusive environment. While we complete the review, we will pause the release of a 2 product which was due to go on sale on February 1, 2022.

The scandals surrounding Activision Blizzard, which was first reported by Bloomberg in July 2021, have since spread further and further circles, which, among other things, are also responsible for the acute delay of Overwatch 2, as some employees responsible for the sequel of the shooter were also fired. LEGO’s decision to review its collaboration with Activision Blizzard is understandable in terms of the seriousness of the allegations, as they are in no way compatible with the corporate values of the LEGO Group.

Why LEGO had sent out the images for the set, which first surfaced a few weeks ago, to retailers in advance in the first place is not really understandable. Considering that the accusations against Blizzard have been known for half a year, this could have been prevented in time. If the image for the set hadn’t surfaced four weeks ago, fans of the theme world wouldn’t have been able to look forward to the set in the first place. And the production of the set also presumably took place for the most part after the allegations became known. This brings back memories of the LEGO Technic Osprey, which LEGO also cancelled at the last moment before release due to incompatibility with the company’s values. It remains to be seen whether some copies of this LEGO Overwatch set will see the light of day, as was the case with the airplane.

Judging by LEGO’s statement, it is still completely unclear at this point whether the LEGO Overwatch 76980 Titan will ever appear.

What do you think about this news? Would you have been looking forward to the Overwatch set, or did you not care about the kit anyway? Feel free to share your thoughts about the news around LEGO, Activision Blizzard and the postponed Overwatch set in the comments. But keep to our netiquette.
