#MMORPGs like #WorldofWarcraft are home to millions of players. Few of them manage to make a name for themselves and even fewer become legends. One such legend is #Angwe, an orc rogue who became the scourge of the Alliance back in Vanilla.
Who is the player?
Angwe is an orc rogue who was in vanilla WoW. By that we don’t mean the new WoW Classic, but actually the original WoW, back in 2005.
Unlike the legendary warrior Kungen, however, Angwe has made a name for himself as a particularly nasty player. He is considered one of the biggest villains in World of Warcraft, aside from story antagonists like Arthas and Kil’jaeden.
YouTube wasn’t as big back then as it is today, and Twitch didn’t even exist in that form. Accordingly, there is little evidence of Angwe’s misdeeds.
Nevertheless, conversations about the nasty villain keep coming up in the community, memories of the old days, or even praises of his achievements. But who exactly is Angwe?
“I just like being Freddy Krueger”.
What is Angwe known for?
Angwe was one of the best PvP players around at the time. As he explains in an AMA on reddit, he was No. 1 or – No. 2 on the PvP leaderboard every week on his server Dethecus.
Back then, it was still about honorable kills. Honor was only given if you killed players at the same level in the open world. Stranglethorn Valley was especially notorious for huge PvP battles and ganks at the time.
Angwe, however, took up residence in the port of Menethil. There he slaughtered rows and rows of Alliance members, those at level 60, but also absolute noobs who simply wanted to level there. As he himself says, he spent 8 to 10 hours a day doing this.
“I just like being Freddy Krueger. […] I loved scaring people, making them look over my shoulder every step of the way. I love being the bogeyman,” Angwe reveals in an interview with PC Gamer 2017.
Interview with a Griefer: “I don’t feel good until others cry.”
That’s why this was particularly nasty:
The port of Menethil was the only reasonable way for Alliance players to get to Kalimdor from the Eastern Kingdoms at the time. There was still Loot Bay, but the ship there led directly to Durotar, a Horde territory.
Ships from Menethil headed for the Dark Coast. So if you wanted to travel back and forth as an Alliance player, you had to go that way. Especially nasty: the port of Menethil is in an area for level 20-30 players, so there was always plenty of fodder for Angwe’s Blades.
Angwe often waited at the docks and assassinated players who just wanted to get on the ship. Sometimes he would even ride along for a bit, kill the people on the ship, and then swim back.
It got to the point where the Alliance players were afraid to even go on the ships. They waited near the guards and sprinted off only when the boat came, hoping not to become Angwe’s target.
Angwe himself even formed his own guild, the Servants of Angwe. Alliance players in this guild, while outed as cowards, were at least protected from the nasty orc and did not become his target.
“You do live in your mother’s basement”.
These were the reactions:
Angwe himself created an Alliance character on a second account. On PvP servers at the time, you couldn’t play both factions. He used his character “Angwespy” to watch his victims get upset with him.
The villain saved the best statements as screenshots and uploaded them to a specially created website. The original of it no longer exists, but some fan sites still exhibit the chat messages and forum posts today. Highlights include statements like:
- “Angwe is a mystical creature. Like Bigfoot. It’s a hard one to find. But if you do, you’ll wish you’d never been born.”
- “I hate you so much, Angwe. You’re a fucking nerd and have absolutely no life. Man, you probably live in your mom’s basement.”
- “Can’t we make some kind of arrangement so you’ll stop killing me? Gold? Armor? EP? Anything?”
At least one guild even specially posted an “anti-Angwe guide” on their own forum, designed to avoid the Orc. Angwe snuck into the guild and still trolled it from within.
How did it end?
However, this very anti-Angwe guild is said to have finally gathered and waited for him. Once he logged in, a veritable army was waiting for him, according to PC Gamer. He was supposedly able to take some Alliance players to the grave with him before he was defeated after all. His final battle.
Shortly thereafter, Blizzard introduced battlegrounds in patch 1.5. PvP enthusiasts could virtually arrange to brawl in instanced areas, and open PvP became less and less important. Honor was on the battlegrounds.
Since you still had to travel to the battlegrounds back then and couldn’t just teleport in, the mass of PvP players shifted towards Ashenvale and Alterac, away from Menethil.
Angwe was no longer the terror of the Alliance. He says himself that he realized he was wasting his life with the way he was playing. Menethil and the Alliance were safe again.
Terrorize Entire Servers – Not So Easy Today
The rogue explains that his drive still comes from Everquest, an older MMORPG. There the tone was much rougher and what he pulled off in WoW was nothing compared to the PvP in Everquest.
In the podcast with the developer of Germany’s biggest MMORPG, we talk about exactly what it’s like to be evil as a player. Listen on Spotify or iTunes, or tune in right here:
WoW players were not used to such assassins and still are not. Grievers are more likely to be reported and avoided, it’s more about interaction and not about annoying others. Blizzard itself even wants to promote good climate with a “social contract” and other ideas.
The war between Horde and Alliance also moved further and further into the background over the years. The factions allied again and again against larger enemies and with patch 9.2.5 Horde and Alliance can even play together properly.
The days of players like Angwe are thus probably numbered. That’s not possible, if only because most players today know a lot more about WoW and Co. If someone were to stand somewhere, they would have someone even better glued to them in no time.
