In Group A, tournament favorite DWG KIA prevailed as expected and was the only undefeated team. Secret tip FunPlus Phoenix, on the other hand, had to bow out after an unprecedented collapse on the last matchday, as did Rogue – instead Cloud9 is the only North American representative in the quarterfinals.

With record winners T1 and Edward , both Asian teams qualified for the quarterfinals in Group B and ensured a clear balance of power early on – the North American champions 100 Thieves and the debutants of the team Detonation FocusMe were only left behind.

In Group C, it all came down to a three-way battle for the two quarterfinal spots, with MSI winners Royal Never Give Up and Hanwha Life both taking the top two positions – PSG Talon, on the other hand, were relegated to third place, while European hopefuls Fnatic only had brief hopes of advancing.

Two records were set in Group D – never before have all four teams been tied for place at the end of the group stage, so after a total of six hours of play, another knockout tournament had to be played in miniature to determine the final two participants. This resulted in the second novelty: Gen.G’s qualification meant that, for the first time, all four teams from a single region (in this case Korea) entered the knockout stage. European champions MAD Lions follow them into the next round, while Team Liquid once again failed to advance, as did LNG Esports.
