League of Legends: Riot under fire for bugs

In the match between LCK record champion T1 and the in the table cellar stuck Hanwha Life Esports on July 13, 2022, several bugs occurred. In the second game of the series, a known bug occurred that caused the runes of Min-hyeong “Gumayusi” Lee had changed when loading into the game. The noticed this unintentional change after four minutes and notified the referee, who, however, decided to let the game continue. It is the duty of the players, says an LCK statement, to check their runes right at the start of the game, since it is a bug that has been known for a long time and reloading the game right at the start is not problematic.

This triggered a debate about whether it should really be the players’ duty to check the technical conditions of the game themselves – in traditional sports, after all, the organizer is responsible for ensuring that flawless playing conditions are available.

Drama about Oner

Much more critical, however, were the incidents in the third game of the series, where once again a mistake occurred with a T1 professional. Hyeon-joon “Oner“Moon had chosen the character Xin Zhao for the game. His Smite ability actually has a long cooldown of 75 seconds, but a bug reduced it to 15 seconds. The T1 player himself noticed it first and communicated it to his team. However, the referee decided not to take any action at first. Only when the other side complained explicitly was the game paused and restarted from an earlier point, although T1 was already almost certain to win.

T1 was denied exactly this measure in the second game, when “Gumayusi” was at a disadvantage due to the rune bug. T1 won the series 2-1, but “Oner” faced a shitstorm from fans afterwards, because in the LCK’s account it looked like he had deliberately kept knowledge of the advantageous bug to himself in order to gain an unfair advantage.

The team, in the meantime, appealed the decisions to the league’s

“Faker” is not known for his plain speaking, which makes his current statements all the more powerful.

The otherwise restrained Sang-hyeok “Faker” Lee, commonly accepted as the best player in the history of “” so far, came out unusually clear in the press conference after the series, “It’s unfortunate that a game-preventing bug kept occurring. I also felt last – Season and in today’s game that when a bug occurs, the speed with which it is fixed takes too long compared to its cause. And it’s disappointing that this affects the gameplay.”

“Today we got five kills first. The fact that for whatever reason there was a chronobreak [eine Pause und Rücksetzung des Spiels] there was, is a decision that degrades the value of eSports not only in the eyes of the players, but also in the eyes of the fans, so it’s very unfortunate.”

“Faker” addressed that in the game there are partly bugs that have been present for years and always affect professional matches. He ended his statement by saying, “I hope that the developer will be able to provide fans with a better game in the future.”
