The next League of Legends event is just around the corner, but instead of rejoicing, the LoL community is disappointed with the Star Guardian event even before its release.
It is one of the most popular skin series in League of Legends and now even gets its own big LoL event: Star Guardian. It’s supposed to happen on July 14, but after the first glimpses on the PBE, the fans’ joy is limited.
From great power, comes great responsibility
Since its release in 2015, the Star Guardian skin series has been the dream come true for all anime fans in the LoL community. With lots of colorful hair colors, cute sailor uniforms, cute companions and a whole lot of glitter, they are the perfect manifestation of the Magical Girl motif. But it’s not just the look that’s exciting: the Star Guardian skins have their own backstory, complete with their own cinematics, music videos, and illustrated short stories that are easy to get lost in.
Therefore, the expectations of the fans for a separate event of the skin series, which should contain many and above all special new skins, were all the greater.
The problem with LoL events
In recent years, there have always been League of Legends events that ultimately caused disappointment. Recurring patterns and lack of creativity caused a lot of criticism. Riot was accused of organizing the events only to make a lot of money with overpriced skins and to disregard the wishes of the community.
The big disappointment
The test server is currently playing patch 12.13 and with it the first part of the Star Guardian event with the following skins:
- Star Guardian Kai’Sa
- Star Guardian Sona
- Star Guardian Nilah
- Star Nemesis Fiddlesticks
- Star Guardian Ekko
- Star Guardian Ekko Prestige
5 more skins will follow in patch 12.14.
However, the enthusiasm about the already released skins is limited. On reddit, both the selection of champions and the quality of the splash arts are criticized. Previously, there were requests and suggestions that were hardly heeded by the developers.
Riot Games can do better
What’s most depressing for many fans is that the Star Guardians event in LoL’s mobile spinoff, Wild Rift, is getting better content at the same time.
While in League of Legends the reward system for the event is being generated and with Ekko a champion has been chosen as a Star Guardian, which many consider misplaced, in Wild Rift there is an event map in the Star Guardian look and skins for fan favorites.
Senna, Seraphine, and Orianna all fit nicely into the Star Guardian motif, and with Orianna, a champion who hasn’t been skinned in a while gets more relevance again. Also, in the eyes of many, the skins look better than their PC counterparts.
Xayah and Rakan, of all people, take the cake with new Star Guardian skins. In 2019, skins of the couple came out as corrupted versions of Star Guardians for LoL. Even then, the community also wanted skins of their original form. But while Riot always rejected the skins in League, they are now available in Wild Rift. According to a reddit user, this is a slap in the face for many PC players.
The future is mobile
Already in previous events, Wild Rift seemed to get more and more attention, while League of Legends events lost quality. Fans now fear that this trend could continue. While League of Legends is all about getting as many expensive skins as possible, Wild Rift offers fanservice. This is a development that LoL fans will not like.
