The MSI is one of the biggest tournaments in and promises to be an exciting event again this year.

LoL

The Mid– Season Invitational (MSI for short) is one of the biggest tournaments in League of Legends eSports. Every year in May, the best teams from all regions of the world compete against each other. The MSI brings together the winners from the spring splits of the various regional leagues, such as LEC and LCS, in a tournament format, and this constellation makes it one of the most successful and exciting LoL events of the year.

MSI 2021 Live from Reykjavík

The MSI has been held in a different country every year since 2015. The first venue was the USA, and since then the tournament has been held in China, Brazil, France, and Taiwan. In 2020 the tournament had to be cancelled due to the Corona pandemic, but this year an offline tournament will take place again, this time in Iceland’s capital Reykjavík. There are still no spectators allowed, unfortunately, but the teams will be live in Iceland, under strict hygiene and health regulations. MSI 2021 will start on Thursday, May 6, with the final taking place on Sunday, May 23.

An exciting and thrilling field of participants

A total of twelve teams have qualified to play the first phase of the tournament in three groups. However, only Eleven of them will participate: Vietnamese team GAM Esports, who would have qualified for the MSI by winning the VCS, cannot make it to Iceland due to national travel restrictions and thus will not participate in the tournament. As a result, Group A is filled with only three teams instead of four. There Pentanet.GG (Oceania), Royal Never Give Up (China) and Unicorns of Love (CIS) will compete against each other

One of the biggest surprises in the regional tournaments came from the European bracket, the LEC. For the first time in the history of the tournament, the winner is neither Fnatic nor G2 Esports. Instead, MAD Lions prevailed over Team Rogue in a thrilling final and will therefore go into this year’s MSI as the European representative. The team around German pro Norman Kaiser will have to prove themselves in Group B against İstanbul Wildcats (Turkey), paiN Gaming (Brazil) and PSG Talon (Pacific)

The field of participants in Group C includes an explosive mix: apart from Cloud9 (North America), who qualified for the MSI for the first time after a turbulent year, DWG KIA, formerly DAMWON Gaming, (Korea) in particular will be in the spotlight. The Korean team won the World Championship in 2020 and has been almost unstoppable so far this – Season . Together with DetonatioN FocusMe (Japan) and Infinity Esports (Latin America), two of the most glorious teams in their respective regions, Group C promises a lot of excitement and entertainment.

What will be played for in MSI?

At the moment, the distribution of prizes is not yet known. The MSI prize money reached sums of up to 1.6 million US dollars in the past, but it is unclear whether these heights can be reached again this year

Outside of the prize money, teams will also play for a chance to qualify for the World Championship. The winning team will get an extra spot for their region at LoL Worlds 2021. In addition, this year for the first time there will be an additional Power Ranking, in which the MSI participants will be evaluated. The region of the best placed team in this ranking will also get a safe qualification place for the World Championship, which will take place in China again.
